Bury were hammered to the tune of four goals by a Sheffield United" target="_blank">Sheffield United side looking for an immediate return to the Championship.

The Blades were a much more switched-on side, getting to the ball first and passing it around with apparent ease, condemning Bury to their second consecutive league defeat.

Former Shaker Chris Porter was a thorn in Bury's side for much of the game, scoring the home side's first goal and setting up the third.

Porter had the home side's first real chance of the match on 11 minutes, after picking up the ball on the left of the box with David Worrall staying close. His shot rolled in front of Cameron Belford and past the far post.

Neill Collins got up well to get his head to a Stephen Quinn corner on 16 minutes, but he headed well over the bar.

A dangerous cross from Michael Jones on the right after 17 minutes was crying out for a tap-in, but the ball rolled just that bit too far for debutant Giles Coke.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing tried his luck from the edge of the box moments later, but his low shot was collected by Belford.

Quinn was inches away from taking the lead on 22 minutes with a curling free kick from 30 yards, but an important save from Belford at the top corner kept it out.

Harry Maguire got on the end of another Quinn corner on 24 minutes but headed wide of the left post.

A pass from Worrall cut the Blades' defence apart on 32 minutes, threading Andy Bishop through on goal before he passed the ball in front of Coke. The ball rolled too far though, into the hands of Steve Simonsen.

Phil Picken found himself in the middle of the Sheffield half on 35 minutes after intercepting a wayward pass, but his long-range shot on goal was caught by Simonsen.

Coke tried a shot from the same position on 38 minutes, but his curling effort went wide of the left post.

GOAL! The home side took the lead with three minutes to go before half time. A shot from Mendez-Laing on the edge of the box was saved by Belford, but the resulting scramble in front of goal saw the ball fall to Porter who slotted in from close range.
