An early gift came in the form of a penalty on 9 minutes which saw the home goalkeeper sent off, but Andy Bishop saw his spot kick saved by the replacement keeper, Paul Gerrard.

He more than made up for that miss with two goals before half time - one set up by Lenell John-Lewis, who later received a second yellow card in the dying moments of the match, and the second from an exquisite Peter Sweeney corner which he buried at the near post.

An early cross from Michael Jones after 2 minutes found the head of Lenell John-Lewis as he leaned towards goal, but Alex Cisak punched the ball clear.

Luca Scapuzzi fired wide on 8 minutes after a gap appeared in the Bury defence; he picked up the ball on the edge of the box, but sent the ball wide of the far post with the outside of his boot.

Oldham were down to ten men after nine minutes after goalkeeper Alex Cisak was sent off for bringing down Andy Bishop as he took the ball past him in the box. A long ball forward saw the last defender and his keeper hesitate, giving Bishop time with the ball and ultimately ending in a straight red card and a penalty for the Shakers.

GOAL! Bishop made up for his earlier penalty miss on 21 minutes by taking the lead for Bury. A neat pass from Lenell John-Lewis found Bishop in front of goal and he buried from close range.

GOAL! Bury doubled their lead on the half hour with Bishop's second of the afternoon. A curling corner from Peter Sweeney on the right found Bishop's head at the near post, and he made no mistake.

Shane Byrne and Bishop had time to weave unchallenged into the Oldham box on 35 minutes, but Byrne's shot was eventually blocked.

A floating cross from Phil Picken on 43 minutes looked destined to meet the head of Bishop who was waiting in front of goal, looking for his hat trick, but Paul Gerrard jumped higher to claim the ball.

Two minutes of added time were mostly taken up by Bury possession, and the Shakers took their lead into the break.

Sweeney took a shot from the edge of the box on 49 minutes after Bishop laid off the ball for him, but he sent his effort wide of the far post.

Tom Adeyemi did the hard work on 55 minutes, taking the ball down the left wing before making his way into the box, but his harmless cross was easy for Cameron Belford to collect.

Kuqi will wonder how he didn't score on 59 minutes - a headed ball found his feet in front of goal, but he sent the ball well over the bar.

Eastham let the ball pass him on its way forward for Kuqi, but he found himself on the left of the box with no support. He tried a shot from the tight angle, but fired well past the far post.

Steven Schumacher tried his luck from distance on 85 minutes; his shot stung the hands of Gerrard, but he spread his body on top of the loose ball.

A long range effort from Smith on 88 minutes looked goalbound after being deflected on its way, but it bounced on top of the Bury bar.

Bury red card on 90 (+2) minutes - Lenell John-Lewis (second bookable offence)

Substitute Shaun Harrad had a golden opportunity to make it three for Bury in the dying moments of added time, but he blasted the ball at Gerrard on the ground.

Four minutes of added time were soon over, during which Bury were also down to ten men with a red card for the already-booked Lenell John-Lewis for a poor challenge at the centre circle.

Bury got their reward for a fine first half display, especially when Oldham came out with renewed confidence in the second period.
