Bury 4 Colchester United" target="_blank">Colchester United 1
by Hannah Ingram at Gigg Lane

Bury became one step closer to League One survival with a rousing win on home turf, taking them to 17th place and seven points clear of the drop zone.

Two first half goals in three minutes from Mike Grella and Shaun Harrad saw Bury go into half time with renewed confidence after their defeat two days previously.

A stunner from Giles Coke brought the house down ten minutes into the second half, and despite a goal from Colchester's Tom Eastman soon after, David Worrall capped a strong Bury performance with a sweetly-struck goal of his own.

Freddie Sears tried something special inside the opening minute - his long-range strike was sweetly-struck and forced Jonathan Bond to tip the ball over his bar.

Peter Sweeney chalked up Bury's first good chance on 8 minutes with a curled effort from the edge of the box which Ben Williams had to block in front of him, with no Bury players running on to challenge him.

Sweeney was back moments later, curling in a free kick from near the corner flag after David Worrall was pulled back by Michael Rose. Sweeney looked for Joe Skarz at the near post but he headed wide.

Mike Grella was back in the team and proving a point on 14 minutes - he did all the hard work in the box, losing his marker with some quick feet, but sent his shot straight at Williams.

Shaun Harrad was inches from breaking the deadlock on 18 minutes when a pinpoint cross from Skarz on the left picked him out perfectly in front of goal. Unfortunately, he tried using a high leg when he should have dived in with his head.

Good link-up play on the left saw Worrall break free with the ball on 25 minutes, but his low cross was cut out before it reached the feet of Harrad.

Steven Schumacher was looking for a chance of his own moments later, after Harrad played him through towards the box from the middle. Known for his strong long-range efforts, Schumacher this time tried a low shot which was saved by Williams on the floor.

GOAL! Bury took the lead with just over five minutes of the first half to play. A foul on Giles Coke saw Schumacher taking a free kick from the middle of the Colchester half - he floated it towards the far post looking for the head of Efe Sodje, but after his header was blocked, Grella was there to poke it over the line.

GOAL! Bury extended their lead on 55 minutes with a well-taken effort from Giles Coke. A cutting through ball found the Sheffield Wednesday loanee with space on the left, and he shot with cool composure to fire Bury three goals to the good.

GOAL! Bury chalked up their fourth of the afternoon on 73 minutes with a sweet finish for Worrall. The Bury boys came forward in numbers when Sweeney picked up the ball on the left, but he picked out Worrall on the right of the box and he buried the ball low and hard into the bottom corner.
