Kevin Blackwell missed the pack again with Tom Soares and Ethan Ebanks-Landell both making their Shakers debuts.  Neither Andy Bishop nor David Healy had made the trip with respective injuries keeping them out of the side.

An early mistake from David Worrall saw Colchester pick up the ball with Anthony Wordsworth; he took it forward through the middle of the park before driving a stern shot straight at Trevor Carson that brought a comfortable save from the Shakers keeper.

It was Wordsworth again minutes later by taking the ball past Joe Skarz, before he looked to deliver the ball into the box for Freddie Sears, but a good diving save from Joe Skarz saw the move killed dead.

Colchester showed their attacking prowess on 10 minutes with a quick counter attack, fast passing and quick feet eventually found Ian Henderson on the edge of the box but his shot flew high, wide and not very handsome.

A quickly taken free kick on 16 minutes from Colchester fell to nothing as the ball was lumped into the Bury box, allowing the Shakers keeper to easily collect before getting the ball back up the field,  Colchester came straight back through Freddie Sears but a challenge by Ebanks-Landell brought another free kick.  The delivery found the head of Eastman but his header again drifted wide of the Shakers goal.

A Bury corner on 19 minutes, following some good work from Tom Soares, saw Steven Schumacher deliver the ball deep into the Colchester box.  Magnus Okuonghae cleared the ball to David Worrall but his shot on goal is probably best forgotten as it caused no problem to anyone.

Bury carved out a half chance on 23 minutes with David Worrall playing a good ball through the middle of the defence, with Hopper bearing down on the ball Magnus Okuonghae managed to clear before Hoppers arrival.

A shot from Ian Henderson on 28 minutes should have found the back of the Shakers net, but for a diving save from Trevor Carson who pushed the ball away for a home corner.  With a quick delivery back into the box from the corner Carson had to show a pair of quick feet to save from Ibhere on the back post.

A 30th minute Colchester free kick, from a dangerous position saw Schumacher hold his position in the Bury wall, before smashing the ball away from the Bury area.  Bury countered quickly with David Worrall but his cross into the Colchester area fell short of Tom Soares and the home side cleared.

Dominic Poleon showed some endeavour on 37 minutes by driving a firm shot at goal that keeper Sullivan somehow managed to spill out for a Bury corner.  The delivery when it did come was easily cleared by the home defence using their height advantage.

Zac Thompson was the next to take a shot from distance, though lacking the pace and power that Poleon’s effort moments earlier, keeper John Sullivan had to stop the effort.

Colchester used their possession well just before the break when Michael Rose fired the ball from the corner, across the face of the Shakers goal.  The cross just needed a touch, but the first touch came from Joe Skarz who cleared.  Moments later a quickly taken free kick from Tom Soares saw him deliver the ball to Worrall, his cross into the box found the head of Tom Hopper but his chance flew inches wide of the goal.

Half Time:  Colchester United 0 Bury 0

Neither side made any changes during the break, an early Bury corner saw Schumacher fire the ball into the box, but it was missed by everyone and rolled away to safety on the far side.

Colchester took the lead on 55 minutes when a cross out wide from Ibhere found Henderson, his quick ball into the box found Wordsworth in plenty of space on the penalty spot to head the ball home.

Goal:  Colchester United 1 Bury 0 (Wordsworth 56)

Colchester then doubled their lead within five minutes; a good ball into the box from Eastmond fell to Freddie Sears, who drove the ball home from close range

Goal:  Colchester United 2 Bury 0 (Sears 61)

A Bury free kick on 64 minutes saw Eastmond placed into the referee’s notebook, but Schumacher’s ball into the box was well dealt with by the home defence before being eventually cleared.

A Bury corner on 68 minutes saw Schumacher deliver the ball, to be met by a good header from Mark Hughes, his effort bounced back off the cross bar before the Colchester defence cleared.

Craig Jones and Peter Sweeney were introduced on 74 minutes with Tom Soares and Mark Hughes making way, and an obvious change of shape to the Bury side.

Craig Jones brought an almost instant impact soon after by forcing a Bury corner, the delivery was met by Matt Doherty but his header again flew straight into the arms of the home keeper.

A foul on Dominic Poleon on 82 minutes brought a frustrated reaction from the on-loan Leeds loanee, but the referee awarded a Bury free kick with no further action against Poleon, the delivery into the box though was easily dealt with by John Sullivan the home keeper.

Colchester nearly increased their lead - through Joe Skarz, a long ball into the box saw Skarz 'chest' the ball back to Carson, however the ball appeared to be heading over the keeper, but a quick leap saw Carson collect the ball.   Moments later Clinton Morrison burst through but made a complete hash of his chance allowing Doherty to smash clear.

A high challenge on Craig Eastman from Craig Jones brought a yellow card in the final minute as frustration came into the Shakers game.  David Worrall joined Jones in the book moments later for a similar challenge.  A corner deep into injury time brought a quick clearance from the home defence and with four minutes added the home side took every opportunity to slow the game down but the final result brought the Shakers good run to an end.
