The Shakers overturned promotion contenders Doncaster with two first half goals for Andy Bishop, on his 250th Bury appearance and Nicky Ajose.

Bury took their 2-0 lead into the break and protected it in the second half, despite a barrage of pressure from the away side, who’d lost one away game all season.

David Cotterill and James Coppinger both went close, but a strong Bury performance left Doncaster frustrated and sent them home with nothing.

The first chance of note fell to Chris Brown on 10 minutes, who headed a cross from the right straight into the hands of Trevor Carson.

GOAL! Andy Bishop broke the deadlock for the Shakers on 25 minutes following a neat flick from Tom Soares on the left. It fell onto the head of Bishop, who floated the ball past Gary Woods.

David Cotterill floated a free kick into the Bury box on 39 minutes, only to watch Trevor Carson collect with ease.

James Coppinger tried his luck from the edge of the box on in added time, only to watch the ball fly just wide of the post, with Carson outstretched.

Doncaster substitution on 52 minutes – Lee Fowler on for Dave Syers

A dangerous free kick from Coppinger on 54 minutes curled into the box, but the chance went begging for the away side.

Doncaster substitution on 56 minutes – Billy Paynter on for Kyle Bennett

A brilliant move forward from Bishop on 60 minutes saw him beat the offside trap beautifully and strike from just inside the box, but Woods had it covered and the rebound was cleared.

Ashley Eastham made an important block on 69 minutes as a strong effort from Doncaster looked set to hit the back of the net and the rebound was blasted way off target by Jamie McCombe.

Doncaster yellow card on 72 minutes – David Coterill

Coppinger forced a brilliant reaction save from Carson on 77 minutes, with a strong effort from the left of the box which the Bury keeper got a hand to.

Cotterill will wonder how he didn’t score on 82 minutes as he met a cross at the far post, but somehow headed over the bar from close range.

Doncaster substitution on 84 minutes – Emile Sinclair on for Chris Brown

Substitute Paynter thought he’d grabbed a consolation for Doncaster in added time, but his diving header went just wide.

Tom Soares was busy at the other end seconds later, as he shot against Woods and couldn’t make the rebound count, putting it agonisingly over the bar from close range.
