A dominant display by the Shakers sealed their first three points of the Checkatrade Tophy Group C in a 4-1 win over Morecambe.
Ismail netted the opener with a penalty on the 3rd minute after Anthony Dudley was brought down, but the visitors hit back on 43 minutes through a fabulous strike by Paul Mullin.
Tom Pope headed the Shakers back into the lead early in the second half, followed by an Antony Kay header and Pope’s second of the game in added time.
David Flitcroft made three changes to his side following Saturday’s draw at Walsall. Pope, Dudley and Jacob Mellis were all promoted from the bench to start the game, whilst Niall Maher and Hallam Hope were rotated to the bench, plus Saturday’s goalscorer James Vaughan was not named on the teamsheet.
Bury made the perfect start with a clever one-two between Pope and Dudley as the latter made a sprint into the visitor’s penalty area and he was brought down for an early penalty. Zeli Ismail stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball past Daniel Nizic in the Morecambe goal.
On 20 minutes Kevin Ellison broke away down the left flank, cutting the ball back into the penalty area for Morecambe but it was half cleared and fell to Lee Molyneux who fired straight at Kay, before the rebound was smashed high over the bar by Rhys Turner.
Danny Mayor searched for the second goal of the game with a mazy run through the Morecambe defence, and his shot was excellently saved down low to Nizic’s left.
On the stroke of half time Mellis’ thunderous effort was well saved by the quick reactions of Nizic.
Although there was still time for one last act of the half. Mullin’s spectacular long range shot dipped underneath Ben Williams’ bar and left the Shakers’ number one with no chance of saving it.
Pope kicked off the second half in style, his glancing header from a Mayor inswinging cross was planted into the bottom corner of the Morecambe goal for his third goal of the season.
Substitute for the away side, Tom Barkhuizen, performed all the hard work down the right wing before cutting the ball back for Mullin, as he waited inside the penalty box, but somehow he hammered the ball over the Bury crossbar.
Kay extended the Shakers advantage with a strong header from a corner after losing his man inside the 18 yard box, preventing a nervy end to the game.
However, Morecambe continued to search for a goal as Jack Dunn’s dipping free kick was well met by Williams and parried out for a corner.
The lead was stretched even further when Mellis played a pin point pass into Pope, and the former Port Vale striker added to his tally as he slid the ball past Nizic and into the back of the net.
Bury will be hoping to add to their win this Saturday when they are back in league action as they face Port Vale at Gigg Lane.
