1000 Goals - 4 Divisions

Posted on: Fri 01 Jun 2007

Brian Barry-Murphy joins three Shakers players in a unique club and creates Football League History in the process.

In the 12th minute of Bury's game with Wrexham at Gigg Lane on 27 August 2005, Brian Barry-Murphy scored the first equaliser of the afternoon to bring the scores level at 1-1.

Not only was the goal vital, coming just two minutes after Wrexham had taken the lead, but the goal was the 1,000th goal scored in the fourth tier of League Football, thus making Bury Football Club the very first club to have scored over a thousand goals in each tier of league football.

This record has not equaled another, it's not beaten another record - it's a first for the football league. Bury Football Club have re-written league history.

Bury Football Club has successfully completed 100 seasons of league football, and the club is now one of 23 clubs to have completed a ton of seasons.

The club is also one of 27 clubs to have played in over 4,000 league games, and one of 24 clubs to have scored over 6,000 league goals.

1000th goal in Tier One was scored by Norman Bullock on 11 December 1926 in a 4-4 draw with Sheffield United.

1000th goal in Tier Two was scored by Eddie Gleadall on 14 March 1953 in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town

1000th goal in Tier Three was scored by David Lee on 09 May 1997 in a 4-1 win over Blackpool

1000th goal in Tier Four was scored by Brian Barry-Murphy on 27 August 2005 in a 2-2 draw with Wrexham

All four goals were scored at Gigg Lane.

The 2005/06 League Two season includes only seven clubs who have experienced top tier league football, the first being of course the Shakers.
Carlisle United, Leyton Orient and Northampton Town have all played just one season in the top flight.Oxford United have totaled three seasons whilst Grimsby Town have amassed 12 seasons, but scored just 756 goals at that level and seem unlikely to add to that in the near future.

Finally, Notts County, who spent 30 seasons in the top flight (1403 goals) are the only club who can equal the shakers record, having scored this far 682 in the 4th tier.

For the record, the clubs who have completed 100 league seasons are:-
Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Bury, Derby County, Everton, Grimsby Town, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Preston North End, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
