After a Bury team with almost eleven trialists in it were defeated at the hands of Altrincham on Tuesday, only three of those trialists remained as the Shakers welcomed Everton to Gigg Lane.
Everton almost took the lead in the very first minute when Victor Anichebe went one-on-one with Jim Provett on the edge of the six yard box. Anichebe fired a low range shot, which was well saved by Provett.
Everton won the first corner of the game on 5 minutes when Dave Challinor deflected a cross from Kissock. The corner was taken short to Neville on the edge of the area. Neville attempted to cross the ball into the six yard box, but the ball went harmlessly past the left hand post.
On 8 minutes Anichebe managed to force the ball away from Ben Futcher, and made a run towards the penalty area. However, Provett rushed off his line to make the tackle, control the ball on his chest and clear it away from danger.
On 10 minutes Everton were on the attack again when Anichebe forced his way into the area and fired a powerful shot towards goal. Andy Parrish blocked the shot and managed to knock the ball away to Nicky Adams for a Bury counter attack. Adams fired the ball down the wing to Hurst, who left the ball for Parrish to fire in a cross. Everton keeper Jon Ruddy managed to come of his line and prevented a header from Drewe Broughton.
The Shakers had another chance on 14 minutes when Drewe Broughton fired a cross into the penalty area looking for Andy Parrish. However, John Ruddy was quick off his line and collected the ball.
On 22 minutes Bury had a huge chance when Richie Baker played a beautiful ball to the edge of the area for Nicky Adams. Adams managed to swerve past the oncoming goalkeeper but was unable to find anyone in the penalty area to make the finish.
Everton should have taken the lead on 26 minutes when Neville played the ball down the wing to Anichebe. He managed to force the ball past an onrushing Provett and played the ball to Jutkiewicz who fired a shot straight at the empty the net, but the ball went wide of the right hand post.
Bury won a free kick on 31 minutes when Nicky Adams was brought down just inside the Everton half. Adams fired the ball towards the left hand post, were Paul Scott fired his header just over the bar.
On 34 minutes Richie Baker won the ball just outside the Everton penalty area. Baker ran into space and fired a powerful shot towards goal. However, the shot was deflected safely into the path of keeper John Ruddy.
With 4 minutes to go until halftime, Bury began to put pressure on Everton when Challinor's cross was headed towards goal by Broughton. However, Everton defender Tony Hibbert managed to put on enough pressure to force the ball wide of the target.
With one minute left in the half, Anichebe made a long run down the right wing and fired the ball into the area. Paul Morgan managed to deflect the ball, but it bounced oddly and went just wide of the post.
Halftime: Bury 0-0 Everton
Everton had the first chance of the second half on 50 minutes when Kissock crossed the ball into the six yard box. Jutkiewicz knocked a glancing header towards goal, which was well saved by Hartlepool trialist Jim Provett.
Bury had their best chance of the game so far on 52 minutes when Nicky Adams made a long run into the penalty area. Adams fired a shot at goal, which was deflected by Hibbert. However, Broughton managed to win the ball and fired another attempt at goal, which forced a quick reaction save from former Cambridge United goalkeeper John Ruddy.
Everton won a corner on 56 minutes when Ben Futcher managed to knock the ball away from the feet of Anichebe. The corner was swung into the six yard box for Jutkiewicz, who headed the ball just over the line to give Everton the lead.

On 60 minutes Everton were on the attack again when Morrison fired a powerful shot from the edge of the area, which was well saved by Provett near his right hand post.
Bury were looking for an equalizer on 61 minutes when Richie Baker received the ball on the edge of the penalty area. Baker fired a powerful shot at goal, which was saved by Ruddy near his left hand post.
The Shakers were beginning to pile pressure on Everton on 63 minutes when Andy Parrish crossed the ball into the six yard box for Drewe Broughton, whose header was just deflected away from goal by Patrick Boyle. Andy Mangnan managed to win the ball back and knock the ball back into the area for Paul Scott, whose shot was just deflected away by Hibbert.
On 65 minutes Bury had another chance to score again when Dave Challinor managed to force the ball away from the hands of John Ruddy. Challinor passed the ball to Ben Futcher, who tried to knock the ball past the off guard Everton keeper, but the ball was deflected over the ball by the Everton defense.
Everton won a corner on 67 minutes when Andy Parrish knocked the ball away from Kissock. The corner was taken short to Morrison, who tried his luck with a long range shot, which went well wide of Jim Provett's left hand post.
On 69 minutes Everton won another corner when Ben Futcher cleared the ball out of play. Phil Neville fired the ball into the penalty area for Kissock, whose header went high over the crossbar.
Bury almost scored an equalizer on 71 minutes when Andy Mangnan fired a close range shot at goal, which had John Ruddy beaten. Unfortunately, the ball went just a few inches wide of the left hand post.
On 78 minutes Bury had a superb chance when Paul Scott fired a powerful shot from 30 yards out, which had John Ruddy beaten, but the ball went just over the crossbar.
