Woodthorpe relishing Carrow Return

Posted on: Fri 04 Jan 2008

Speaking to BBC Norfolk on Thursday evening, Bury defender and former Canary Colin Woodthorpe spoke of his fondness for Norwich and the memories that Saturdays game has brought.

"I didn't see the third round draw, I was away at a children's birthday party when the draw was made, so I didn't see it but a couple of the players had sent me text messages saying the draw was very fitting for me, they didn't actually say who we had drawn but once I did see it, I was very pleased to get the chance to possibly play at Carrow Road for one last time."

"It will be fantastic for me to run out at Carrow Road.I had a great four years at Norwich and not only as a football education, but Norwich was a great place to live and I met some great people, it was a fantastic time for me."

"I don't know what sort of reception I will get, we played at Chester a few weeks ago and I got a good reception from the Chester fans, so hopefully I will get the same at Norwich."

"I'm 39 in January and possibly the last of the players from that era at Norwich that is still playing."

"I played in some big games for Norwich, one was a 3-0 win over Liverpool at Carrow Road, and I scored one of the goals. You don't get many goals as a defender, but when you score against a team that you didn't like as a boy - I was a massive Everton fan. I wouldn't say it was a great goal.I was inside the six yard box and Bruce Grobbelaar gave me a second chance at it, so I was grateful to have two bites of the cherry. I am not going to miss twice!"

"It was so long ago now and I remember looking at a copy of 442 magazine recently and there was a big piece about the European ties.It did bring things back and makes you realise just how long ago it was.Obviously it was disappointing what happened to the club the season after I left, but it's unbelievable that thirteen years have passed by."

"The European games are a great memory and for that squad of players, it was what we deserved after the hard work that we out in the season before. They were a completely good honest bunch, not good but great players and very consistent."

"The Inter Milan game at the San Siro seemed to fly by at the time and it was a much easier game than people think about.Because of the suspensions and injuries we had then, the manager had to play the team he wanted to play there at Old Trafford on the Saturday, and that was ten times a harder game, but we drew 2-2 and it was an easy game."

"Saturday's game is a big game for Bury and it will be nice to get away from the league where we have gone through a bit of a sticky patch, but for me it's fantastic and to just be able to go back to Norwich one more time it great."
