He can be a top player

Posted on: Mon 21 Apr 2008

On Friday we revealed that second year scholar Ricky Anane had been awarded his first pro contract after successfully coming through a two year scholarship with the youth team.Speaking after Saturdays win over Macclesfield Town, manager Alan Knill told us about Ricky and the four lads that had been released.

"Ricky Anane is going to be a top player, or he could be a top player. He's got pace, he's good on the ball and the biggest for me is his unbelievable attitude and work ethic. He puts a shift in wherever you ask him to play and I think he has a really bright future."

"He wants to learn, he sits and listens. He doesn't think that he's made it, which sometimes can be a problem with the younger players. They always think they know it all and fortunately Ricky is one that doesn't.He's happy to listen and if he listens well, he will be a good player."

"At the same time, it's really tough to see four lads leaving us.It's a big blow to them. They set out for a career in football. It's not the first hurdle but it is a real blow for them. We've done it for the best interests of the lads first and then the best interests of the football club, but we will try our best to get them somewhere to go and play.I think that's important."

"Once they are discarded from us, they have to think that this is it.They've been in the system for a long time and I have think we have an obligation to make sure we still have an eye on what they do so we will try our best to find them new clubs and careers in the future. We owe them that because they have been excellent whilst they have been here."
