Incredible achievement
When Alan Knill arrived at Gigg Lane on 05 February, the Shakers were languishing fourth from bottom of the football league just two points above the relegation zone, yet just over three months later, not only has league survival been achieved but the points tally has more than doubled.
The gaffer quickly saw the problems both before he officially took over and the day after when Stockport ran out 3-2 winners at Gigg Lane.Alan Knill acted quickly by bringing in three players on loan. Elliott Bennett had arrived a week previously, but the arrival of Efe Sodje, Darren Randolph and Adam Rooney was enough to brighten things up to such an extent that we now sit mid table, safe from relegation. Optimism for next season is pouring through the doors at Gigg Lane.
Speaking to buryfc.co.uk on Thursday, gaffer Alan Knill said: "There's been a change of mentality with the players, plus there's also been a kind of change of mentality for the supporters. They had got used to coming here and it not being good, it was easy for them to be negative. Now though, instead of coming and booing, they come and support and it's good that they can come and support the players."
"It's a shame that the season finishes on Saturday. Everyone is talking about where could we have been, but the main thing was for us to be safe and stay in the league. That was the main thing, and we've done that."
"We can get 59 points from the season, I really wanted 60 points, but 59 would be a pretty good haul. 56 is a pretty good haul considering where we've come from, but we want 59 and it might just take us into the top half of the table."
"It's come so quickly and it's been fantastic. Seven points from April, 16 in March and 8 in February. When I came in, I honestly thought this would go right to the last game. I thought it would be pretty close, but credit to the players, they have been fantastic."
