Four star Shakers
Alan Knill used a total of 20 players for the opening pre-season game at the Inn2Gether Stadium, with two good sides combining experience, youth and trialists.
The first half started with the following line up:-
1 Cameron Belford, 2 Paul Scott, 3 David Buchanan, 6 Ryan Cresswell, 7 Stephen Dawson, 8 Richie Baker, 16 Efe Sodge, 10 Danny Racchi (Trialist), 12 Michael Jones (Trialist), 14 Phil Marsh (Trialist), 15 Gary Wales (Trialist).
The first half took around ten minutes to get going but when it did start, it was a case of trialists taking over and looking to impress - and did they....
Former Tranmere winger Michael Jones had the first half chance when he collected the ball out wide and burst into the middle of the park and the edge of the Radcliffe box, only to see his effort fly wide of the target.
Moments later a stern challenge on Phil Marsh, who was sent sprawling to the floor, released Danny Racchi down the right hand side, his powerful run down the flank brought an excellent cross into the box that flew too high for the Shakers front line to connect with.
Former Scottish Premier league striker Gary Wales, a surprise inclusion in the Bury side, showed some good touches thoughout his 45 minutes, including one superb effort that he pushed forward with his chest to set up a chance for Jones. It was Jones and Marsh combining on 20 minutes that carved open the home defence, that contained former Shaker Lee Unsworth.Moments later, Gary Wales powered a strong ball across the box where fellow trialist Phil Marsh placed a crisp shot into the top corner to open the scoring.
Goal: Radcliffe Borough 0 Bury 1 (Phil Marsh 21)
Five minutes later and new addition Stephen Dawson delivered a good fast ball into the box, but Gary Wales only managed to nod the ball wide of the target from the delivery.Richie Baker flashed a long range effort just wide two minutes later.Just before the half hour, Bury doubled their lead when Richie Baker delivered a sublime defence splitting ball through to Wales, the former Kilmarnock striker struck with precision to smash the ball into the roof of the net leaving the home keeper rooted to the spot.
Goal: Radcliffe Borough 0 Bury 2 (Gary Wales 29)
With six minutes of the half remaining, Efe Sodje set off on a full pitch dance and jog with the ball, his antics had the strong away following cheering with every move and touch, his impact on the Shakers supporters was obvious to all, his final touch once in the box though perhaps showed why he's a central defender and not a striker as his effort was easily dealt with by Lee Unsworth and cleared.
Both Marsh and Wales had further efforts in the remaining minutes, and though the home side had failed to test Cameron Belford in goal, there were brief touches from former Bury players Lee Connell and Martyn Forrest. The Shakers were simply too strong for their Unibond neighbours.
Half Time: Radcliffe Borough 0 Bury 2
Second Half line up: 1 Cameron Belford, 4 Steve Haslam, 5 Ben Futcher, 9 Glynn Hurst, 11 Brian Barry-Murphy, 17 Ricky Anane, 19 Jack Dorney,18 David Thompson (Youth team), 20 Paul Tierney (Trialist), 10 Danny Racchi (Trialist), 21 Nathan Joynes (Trialist)
Cam Belford and Danny Racchi were the only players to play both halves of the game, though it quickly became obvious that the old and the youth were to play a key part in the second spell. It took only two minutes for the Shakers to extend their lead when Jack Dorney had a good shot on goal half cleared, but only as far as Glynn Hurst, who drove out a quick foot to divert the ball into the back of the Radcliffe goal.
Goal: Radcliffe Borough 0 Bury 3 (Glynn Hurst 47)
On 54 minutes, a mistake by the home keeper almost proved to be a costly mistake as he half cleared the ball direct to the feet of trialist Nathan Joynes, but the shot stopper atoned for his error by producing a fine save from the former Barnsley strikers right footed shot.Less than a minute later and the keeper was again making good saves, this time from a Jack Dorney cross that saw Ben Futcher leap above the home defence to head theball on target that was very well saved.
Another minute later and Ricky Anane showed a brief glimpse of his potential when he took the ball to the bye-line and fired the ball along the face of goal, beating the keeper and defenders.More skill from Anane came some five minutes later with more or less a full gallop up the Radcliffe slope only for the ball to be nipped away from him once in the box.
Bury made it 4-0 on 68 minutes when Dorney again turned provider with an excellent cross from the left hand side, where Glynn Hurst again had the easiest of tasks in diverting the ball beyond the keeper.
Goal: Radcliffe Borough 0 Bury 4 (Glynn Hurst 68)
It was 76 minutes before Belford was tested for the first time when a fierce drive from the edge of the box brought a good reaction save that had to be tipped over the cross bar.Moments later Steve Haslam shot from distance but his effort just drifted away from the target.Hurst did have the ball in the back of the net for a third time, but the obvious offside flag, though late, was correct.
Finally with less than a minute to go, a rare Radcliffe Corner saw a deep delivery to the back post where Mark Jones rose high to head the ball beyond a stranded Cameron Belford, though the goal was nothing more than a consolation goal.
Final Score: Radcliffe Borough 1 Bury 4
Overall it was a comfortable run out for Bury, and Alan Knill will have more than a few selection problems after good performances from all the trialists.
