Bobby Owen in Legends

Posted on: Thu 07 Aug 2008

A former apprentice who made the grade at Gigg Lane and made his first team bow as a 17 year old in the final fixture of the 1964/65 season against Rotherham.  He signed professional forms the following August and immediately pushed his claims for a regular first team spot.

When Ray Pointer was sold to Coventry in December 1965 young Owen stepped into his Gigg Lane shoes and scored five goals in his debut season.  He became a popular player at Bury with his bustling style and powerful shot and matured into a regular performer between 1966 and 1968.

Indeed he was the top scorer in the entire Football League in Bury's 1967/68 promotion season with 23 goals when he missed just five games.  With a record of 85 League Games and 37 goals during his time at Bury, he attracted interest from Manchester City - and especially so after scoring twice against them in a friendly match at Maine Road in May 1968.

The inevitable happened and City came back with a £35,000 bid for the 20 year old striker in July 1968.  He scored after just 35 seconds of his City debut in the Charity Shield at Maine Road against West Brom, but generally struggled to make an impact at First Division Level and didn't score a goal again until January 1969.

In all, he played 22 games and scored 3 goals and after a loan spell with Swansea in March 1970 he signed for Carlisle and enjoyed a highly successful six year spell with the cumbrians which saw Owen score 51 goals in 204 games.  During his spell at Carlisle, they also gained promotion to Division One for the first time in 1974.

After loan spells at Northampton and Workington, Owen returned to Gigg for a loan spell in February 1977 and although he scored in a 3-1 away win at Reading, he didn't really make much of an impression during his second spell here.  In July 1977 he moved to Doncaster Rovers and played a further 77 League Games for them before ending his career with Gainsborough Trinity.

Bobby is also the featured in Saturdays edition of the new look 'Gigg Issue' as James Bentley speaks to him in the History Boys feature.  Speaking in the programme, Bobby recounts the days of scoring goals by saying: "I scored 27 goals and it was the best season of my career," he remembers. "My daughter even came home with a bubblegum card of me back then."

Bobby will be in Legends Sports Bar from around 2:15 on Saturday as well as making his way back onto the Gigg Lane pitch at half time.
