Classic Extended Highlights
Back in the dark days of administration in 2001, the club appealed for items of memorabilia to sell in order to raise funds for the save our shakers campaign.
Amongst the many items that were donated to the club were four reels of 16mm cine film, with a brief note explaining what was on the films. Highlights from the 1952 FA Cup Final between Newcastle United & Arsenal at Wembley, the 1956 FA Cup Final between man City & Birmingham City at Wembley, the World Cup clash between England & Brazil in Gothenburg and perhaps the best 14 minutes of football of all….
The final reel of film has 14 minutes of highlights from the Second Division clash played on Saturday 23 February 1957 - Bury v Notts Forest. The game finished a 2-1 defeat at Gigg lane.
A handwritten note amongst the reels gives the teams of all the sides involved, and according to the note, the two sides that day were:-
Bury: 1 McClaren, 2 Robertson, 3 Conroy, 4 May, 5 McGrath, 6 Neill, 7 Robinson, 8 Tilley, 9 Parker, 10 Reid, 11 Lockhart
Notts Forest: 1 Nicholson, 2 Hutchinson, 3 Thomas, 4 Morley, 5 McKinlay, 6 Burkitt, 7 Higham, 8 Barrett, 9 Wilson, 10 Rally, 11 Imlach
Obviously there were no subs in those days, though as you watch the video, it becomes apparent that the Shakers could have done with one as keeper Roy McLaren has to leave the field injured. Perhaps the biggest surprise regarding the video is the weather; a modern day game would almost certainly not be played in such conditions.
The club will be making a copy of this unique DVD available for sale, and includes highlights of all the above games. In total, the DVD is just over one hour long.
The Difference between this game, 52 years ago, and today's game is there for all to see
