Knill praises the winners

Posted on: Wed 05 May 2010

"Stephen Dawson has had another good season; he's just a good player. It says lots that he gets into the PFA Team of the Year; he's just a good player. He's been rewarded by the supporters and by his fellow professionals and he's proved to be a good signing for us, we need to find a few more like him."

"He wants to come and talk to me about the contract offer, and he knows that it is going to be a difficult one with the current financial climate.Unfortunately for many football clubs, the ball is in the player's court at these times. There are a lot of players at a lot of clubs that are out of contract soon and the ball really is in their court. It's good for them because they have done really well, but it's just difficult for us.We did offer him a really good contract but he decided that he wanted to lay higher, preferably with us, but in any case, he wants to play higher. We can't knock anybody for wanting to better themselves.Whatever happens, and hopefully he stays here, but if he doesn't he will go somewhere else higher than us then good luck to him."

"Ryan Lowe is another good signing and he's won a few awards on Tuesday evening, though I have to say that we did work pretty hard to get him and bring him to the football club.We knew what we were getting from him, he had just scored 19 goals for Chester.Ryan will thin that he should have more than 19 goals this season. He is his own biggest critic but a really good player.I think he's had a really good season for us, hopefully next year he will have a better season."

"We are nursing him through to the end at the moment.I want to start the leading goal scorer, this dilemma came when he missed the Lincoln game, and we had to rest him for ten days hoping that the tear in his abductor would heal.We got the results from his scan last Thursday and they said that it hadn't healed. The medical advice said play him from the bench. We thought about it and just though that he should play and go for it.Then you think about it and we decided to put him on if we needed him. There is a risk that it could go and he will then need surgery. Its difficult to take but I want to start him. He's a good player and in good goal scoring form.Whenever he is on the pitch, he looks like he can score."

"Brian Barry-Murphy was named players player of the season. The players see him every day, I see him every day.For some reason there is a negative about him that I don't see.In the time that I have been here, he's been fantastic everyday. The things that we want to do, Brian tries to do.The good thing about him is that he has a desire to be better and play well.We talk about a shape or a movement to get him on the ball, you watch him training and you can see that he is trying to do that for us. I think he is a top player; he is a student of the game and he's just quality. He's a real thinker and a proper professional footballer."

"Before I came, he was injured for long spells and there was a real negative surrounding him.I've spoken to him about it; I told him that if was fit towards the end of that first season that he would get a new contract. When I came into the club and watched him, I thought he was the player that if you handle him right and give him the responsibility, that he will be the main player for you.Brian has been a good a player that I think I've ever been involved with, that's as a player and manager."

"We watch him every day and since I have been here, I think we've come off the training ground and said that he was awful in training twice, it's twice in two and a half years. He is on his game every day. It's about the perceptions of a midfield player; some are all action like Stephen Dawson.Brian is not all action, he's cultured, and he reads the game really well and the pair of them works really well together. As much as I think Stephen Dawson is a great player, I think he would be the first one to say that he is playing with a great player. He's a big influence, I speak to him a lot and it's usually sense that he talks. He's never about himself, he's about the team.I just like him and he is a proper team player and a proper professional."
