Alan Knill's second summer signing is former Scotland U21 midfielder Peter Sweeney from Grimsby Town.
Sweeney, aged 25, has signed a two year contract with the Shakers. Glasgow born Peter started his career south of the border at Millwall, making his debut in 2002. He went onto become a first team regular at the New Den and played in the 2004 FA Cup Final against Manchester United. UEFA Cup football followed the season after, though it was only to be in the first round as Millwall were eliminated at the first stage.
During his time with Millwall he won six Scotland U21 caps and two caps at England School Boys level. Following his success in London he moved further north and signed for Stoke City, with the Potteries based club paying £250,000 for his services. A pre-season game against Newcastle Town brought an early injury that lasted for three months. On transfer deadline day (Jan 2007), Peter joined Yeovil Town on loan, but returned to Stoke at the end of March at his own request.
Walsall became the next stop, when he signed a two month loan deal in November 2007, again he returned to the Potters on completion of the loan spell. In January 2008, Stoke accepted an undisclosed bid from Leeds United. He arrived at Elland Road on a 2 ½ year deal though he failed to establish him self for the Yorkshire based side though and moved to Grimsby Town in March 2009, initially on loan. His loan at Blundell Park became permanent in July 2009 and scored his first goal for the Mariners against Rotherham in a 2-1 defeat.
Following Grimsby's relegation to the Blue Square Conference, he was named as one of seven players to be placed on the transfer list by manager Neil Woods. Following a medical at Gigg Lane on Monday evening Peter has agreed and signed the contract.
In total, Peter has a total of 185 appearances and 13 goals to his name.
Reaction from Alan Knill and Peter himself will be available later.
