The Nasty Side of the Game

Posted on: Wed 08 Nov 2006

Chris Brass

Chris Brass tries to explain what has changed within the side and why all of a sudden the Shakers are charging up the table

"It's good to get back in the side and back amongst it.  You have to credit everybody involved after winning six games.  It's a massive achievement.  We stressed before the game that it was five games and it might be the first time in nearly ten years that we stretch it to six."

"There's an ethos running through the club now and people understand just what direction we are going now, people have bought into it and it's pleasing to play in the side at the moment."

"It's been difficult and nobody hid behind that fact at the start of the season and in the same token, nobody is going to get carried away.  Some were reservedly worried but we knew once we had people fit that things would start to slot into place and that we could go in the right direction."

"Thankfully we've done it at a rate of knots and we are realistic to know that at some stage the run will come to an end, and then the next challenge will be how we bounce back.  At the moment you can see it around the club and the young lads understand what's being asked of them and certainly what's needed to win football games."

"At times on Tuesday night, we've had to dig deep again and do the nasty side of the game.  The first half was fantastic and it was entertaining football.  It was what everybody wants to watch. The second half wasn't a spectacle for the spectators, but none the less, we still did the nasty side of it."

"The way we are defending is pleasing, that's the way we earn our corn and as a defender, you do enjoy it.  I've had a few kicks and scrapes and all the rest of it on Tuesday night, but as a defender that's what you expect.  You put your neck on the line and certainly at Notts County the defence were magnificent and at Rochdale we all had to dig in."

"It's from within, Andy Bishop his worked his socks off and that's where it starts.  It's the ethics that have been drilled into people. Its hard work, but success is hard work. It was highlighted on Tuesday night when news filtered through that Southend had beat man United, and that was against one of the best teams in the world.  Alex Ferguson won't be happy with that.  Chris (Casper) has obviously touched on the background, but that's what you are trying to install and hopefully with the youngsters here, Bury will have some success."

"I made one block last night, I knew the lad was going to have a shot on goal.  It's that sort of thing that is the do or die, it's what you've got to do. I know what you have got to do, perhaps its experience, but now and then you have to take one in the nether region.  At the end of the day, I'd rather take one there and collect the three points."

"It's the nasty side of the game, its not something you will see on the showboating section on a Saturday morning, but that's the side that can win football games as well as somebody with a tremendous piece of skill.  The emphasis at the moment is on the team, everyone is fully aware of what is expected of them and because of that, we are getting goals."
