We looked more fluent

Posted on: Sun 02 Nov 2008

'I'm delighted to be back to winning ways. It was a pretty open game. We probably had the best chances in the first half, althought Notts did have chances as well. In the second half, I dont think Brownie has had a save to make, yet their keeper has, but I'm delighted and the biggest thing for us is the clean sheet.'

'We were a bit lucky at times, but that what has been missing, we havent had that luck. We've done everything right, but just not had that bit of luck. We had it today but within that we had some pretty good play as well.'

'The lads threw everything at it today, they were throwing bodies behind balls and stopped everything they had, but to be honest, we should have to ask for that. We just had to get back to playing like that. Its been a disappointing week because I dont think we deserved to lose at Bradford, but we did, so we've been on at the players all week about being committed to what we want to do and what we want to achieve.

I think Notts County are a good team and this is a great result for us. They were undefeated in eleven game upto last Saturday, yet like us, they've lost three games in a week. I know their manager really well and they are a really tough side, but for us to have created as many chances as we did, and to only score one of them is disappointing, but the good thing is that we are creating. We looked more fluent today than we have done for a while and the biggest thing is that there was something on the end of it.

We hit the post early on, the keeper has made a great save from Bish. I just thought we looked dangerous whenever we picked the ball up and went at them.

In the end, it was a set play that got the goal and it was a great header from Ryan Cresswell. I'm delighted for him. We put on the notice board before the game that it might be that, it might be a set peice. Fortunately, we are fairly good at set pieces and we do score a lot of goals from set plays. Its really important at any level to be good at them so we defended them really well and scored from one when we needed to.

Cressa was dead on his feet at the end, but to be fair, there has been a couple. Ryan went home after training yesterday and was sick all afternoon. Bish had it the other day and was ill all night and thats why we took him off.

We had our hearts in our mouths at the end when Weston had the shot on the turn that just went wide. That was ot bit of luck, seven days ago, that goes in, but you have to take it and hope and learn not to let it happen again. We have to move onj quickly now, the three points are fantastic.

The idea now is to start another run now. I heard Steve Bruce say something the other day aboiut the October that Wigan have had, they have to put it behind them because its November now. Its the same for us. You cant do anything about it and you try your best to keep all the negativety away because it is there. You lose three games and all of a sudden I'm receiving letters from everybody about how poor we are, and I'm doing this wrong and that wrong, so you try and keep that away from the players and focus on what we are.

We think we are a good team and a result at Notts County is a great result. Games are coming thick and fast and its easy to lose three in a week. The manner in which we have lost the games was more disappointing in that we have given the teams a goal start. I think that in most of the games where we have scored first, we've usually gone on to win the game, so the thing for us, we cant give teams a goal start. We have to score first and then we are pretty strong.

In the first half, the two wide men created havoc. I thought Mike Jones was the best player on the pitch by far. he is a really young lad, he's only 20 but he is an unbeleivable talent and like Elliott, they are both going to dip and come back to form. Its our job to help them and we talk to Jonah and Elliott. We show them and we help them and then we let their talent come through, but they were both excellent, especially in the first half.

Mike Jones got his reward in the second half with the free kick for the goal. he is a talented player and I think he's had two poor games out of 15, so if he has two more poor games in the next 15 games, I will be delighted.

I have to make two changes for Tuesday at Darlington with Dawson and Sodje both suspended. There may be more. Bish is feeling really tired, but we will see how they are on Sunday. The most important thing on Saturday though was three points in the league. We had to stop the slide and it will keep all the doubters away for two weeks because we havent got a league game for two weeks now. We can move on now, put October behind us and see how many points we can get in November.

I was getting these letters during the pre-season. I've got one on the board in the office that somebody wrote to me moaning about the squad I'd put together, they said it was an absolute joke and so n so n so. I just keep it their to remind me and when you think everything is all right, I just look at that because you know whats coming, as it has done. It keeps yopu focussed and makes you strong. WHat doesnt kill you, makes you stronger.
