A top class performance

Posted on: Sun 14 Dec 2008

"Three goals, a clean sheet and second in the table - I've had worse days.  It was quality but it's disappointing that for some people, it's not good enough.  There was one bloke in the main stand, we were three nil up and he has to shout something that is pretty negative.  I probably didn't react in the right way, but what do you have to do.  He was telling me to get my midfield players off the back four.  It is disappointing and I shouldn't have reacted the way I did, but sometimes you can't help it.  The majority of the crowd did applaud my response though."

"In the first half, people here won't have seen a performance like that in three or four years, that's how good it was.  We were shocked.  I'm stood there, and we know that we have the technical players, but when it all comes together, then that's the result, they were fantastic today."

"From start to finish, we were brilliant and in the second half we did what we had to do, but probably still had better chances than Port Vale did.  We had enough counter attack chances and the keeper has made a great save from Bish.  All in all, it was a top class performance from us."

"That's seven goals and two clean sheets in two home games.  It just reminds everybody that we are going ok, we are a decent team.  I must admit that if I had come and paid to get in today, I would have thought that this was pretty good entertainment."

"Port Vale won their last game, they are no mugs.  In the first half, they just couldn't live with us.  We were mobile and we had pace and then the best part, you put the ball in the back of the net when you have to.  The third goal was crucial for us and it really killed the game."

"Our biggest asset this season has been dead balls, and our dead ball man wasn't even on the pitch.  Murph did his back on Tuesday.  We've had to train on Astroturf because we couldn't get on grass and he jarred his back.  That's the value of having a squad and Richie Baker came in today and took his chance, he was excellent.  I don't know if Murph will be back for next week, but I hope so, the more competition that I can have for places, the better.  Now we move onto a tough game at Bournemouth next week."

"Results seem to have gone for us today, but I don't pay much attention to that, its each game.  If we can get another result next week, and then in the three games over Christmas, then it starts to look pretty strong for us.  It's just great and for me as the manager and coach, to watch the players play with freedom and expression is fantastic."

"Elliott Bennett is supposed to leave in January, but we don't think he will.  I know the lad himself doesn't want to.  We've spoken to Wolves and they are pretty strong on the lad staying here so we are hopefull that we can do something with that.  The biggest one though is that he knows he will play here, and he knows that he is going to get better.  We have a really good relationship.  I trust him and he trusts me with his career and about some decisions.  He knows that if he comes here, he is going to get better. We can extend his loan for another six months and that's what we are trying to do."

"We are in preliminary talks with Andy Bishop about extending his contract.  Really it was to see what Andy felt about it and it went quite well, so hopefully we will know within the next week where we are going to go with it.  We don't want him to leave, that's the bottom line and if we can sort out a deal to keep him here, then that's really the way forward for us.  He is a quality goal scorer and there may be clubs looking at him and they can offer him more money, but we will try our best to keep him here.  My gut feeling is that he will stay, Andy is in a strong position but again he knows that we like him and whatever offer we make to him, will be the best offer that we can make."

"Glynn Hurst has waited for his chance and that's how to answer it - score goals. I'm delighted for Hursty, he's a top lad and he is repaying."
