Missing promotion by one goal hurts [UPDATED]

Posted on: Thu 11 Jun 2009

"The Ryan Lowe deal was done two weeks ago but I didn't want it to go to press until we had Danny Carlton as well. Unfortunately I spoke to somebody at Sky Sports and they decided to put it out last Friday and that's made it kind of difficult, but it's out now and obviously I am delighted with getting both of them."

"Ryan comes with a very good pedigree. He was Chester's player of the season and scored 18 goals in a struggling side. He's not someone that we have just come across. He's a player that I've known about for a long time. I watched a fair bit of Chester last year and he's a bit different to what we've got."

"Technically he's really good, when you come through Crewe your usually good technically. I've seen him quote a bit through last season and have always been impressed with his performances. He is a really clever player and the kind of player that I like. There isn't just one dimension to him, he can play all over as well but the most important thing for me - he puts the ball in the back of the net. His record in a struggling team is pretty good

"I've signed him as a centre forward, he can play wide right but last season he scored 18 goals as a centre forward and I want him to score 18 goals again this season. It's the same with Danny Carlton - I want more goals. If we had scored more goals, we would have been promoted - it's as simple as that."

"I watched Danny Carlton a few times at Carlisle as well and have always liked the way he plays. We tried really hard to get him when Chris Wilder came to the club. We tried twice in the end and on both times were turned down by the club. He went to Morecambe and then to Darlington on loan. I just like what he will give us, he is aggressive and has a real edge to his game. He will work the channels and has a really good work ethic. He's 25 and is a really good age, there is plenty there to work with. I like what he gives you and when I spoke to him - he's not happy, he wants to be better and I think we can make him better."

"To make them better is my promise to them and to be fair to both players, I always meet them without the agents involved and none of them have talked about money. I don't like talking about money anyway. I want to know what they want to do, what they see for themselves and how they think they can improve. If we can do those things for them and make them a better player. I talk about money with the agent and very rarely with the player. Both of them are not interested in the money, they just want to be better and the good thing is that they both think that by coming here - they are going to get better. They've seen the way we play and we want it bad."

"They are both goal scorers and that's massive for me. Towards the end of the season we had the luxury of having four strikers and it does make a difference. I wouldn't like it as a centre half when you see two strikers go off and a fresh two come on. These are two players, I'm not putting unknown's on who can be hit and miss, these are players with a CV that have done it."

"I'm not fussed who plays, we have four good strikers and I want competition for places. If you score then obviously they will stay in the side. If you don't, there will be somebody else who also wants to score and stay in the side. Missing promotion by one goal hurts a lot."

"My priority was the two strikers, now we have those sorted we will move on though I do have the majority of the squad. I just need probably two, maybe even three as competition. Just like we had last year. The budget will be more or less the same as last season. It will be pretty much the same as last year and fingers crossed, it will all go well again. We have trialists coming in for pre-season with us and like last year, they have a good chance to getting something."

"I saw the story regarding Mark Tyler, but I haven't spoken to him since he left us. He was great for us when he was here but we do have a good keeper already in Wayne Brown. He's got another year left with an option after that so there is no movement on Mark Tyler."

"BBC Wales phoned me last week and spoke to me about Swansea. All I said was that it is a great club and that I had a great time there as a player. He asked me if I was ruling myself out to which I said that I wasn't ruling myself in or out. First of all Roberto hadn't moved and there wasn't a job. I said that for any manager, it's a pretty good job. The next thing I read is that I said I'm looking at Swansea and I didn't say that. I have a job and it is good to be linked with something like that, but I have a job."
