We do look pretty sharp

Posted on: Sat 11 Jul 2009

"That was jut a good game though obviously both teams are only a week into pre-season but I thought it was fairly competitive for a pre-season friendly, but we are all delighted.  There were some tackles in there, but there was no malice in them and the game was played in the right spirit.  Both teams had a good work out."

"I'm not surprised at all about how we played, we work hard on that.  We worked hard on retaining the ball and moving the ball.  It's pretty much the same as what we were last season.  We have a pattern of play and an idea of what we want to do and you can see that we are a year down the line.  It comes more natural to them now than it did six months ago or eight months ago."

"That's one game down and we were saying before the game - here we go, we are putting the foot onto the roller coaster again for the next ten months, but I am delighted, and I am delighted with the players, they showed a great attitude and you look at them - they just want to win."

"It's good to see Ryan Lowe get off the mark, but he is a good player with some of his touches plus he's bright.  He's not a surprise, we know the quality he has and we thought we would add more to us and I think he will as will Danny Carlton.  Danny is aggressive whenever there is a ball to be challenged; he makes it a big challenge for the centre halves.  We are looking pretty good and it surprised me how well we played because we are only five days in and credit to the players because they really do look after themselves whilst they are away from us.  It looks so far after one game that they've come back with the right attitude."

"Ryan Lowe and Andy Bishop looked like they have played together for years, and I hope it stays like that, but the good thing is that we are not reliant on Andy Bishop.  We have four strikers that are all proven now, even when Domaine Rouse came on, he did quite well."

"Its tough to get into that now, Andy Morrell was watching and he knows.Any successful team has that and they all understand that they are all going to play at some stage, but they know that if they want to start, they have to be at their best every day."

"Simon Johnson is on trial with us and I thought he looked lively.  Every time he got the ball he looked a threat.  Its just lack of fitness and he is feeling a little bit sore but we will probably keep him for a little while, unless someone else comes in for him, but going forward - he is exciting. He's good with the ball and he's going over the ball."

"We have a few trialists with us, more this year than we have had before and it was really just a case of lets see.  We picked up Mike Jones and Danny Racchi last year who are both really good technical players and we've got really good technical player's in this year.  Whenever they had the ball, they looked comfortable with it.  Obviously we are not going to sign all of them though I just mentioned that to one of the directors who then made a quick exit, but the good thing is that we are attracting the right sort to come in and if they do come in, they know how we play and what we want but we will probably make some decisions or the week after."

"Playing on Friday and Monday has come good for us, then we play Oldham on Saturday.  There are plenty of games for everybody and hopefully we will probably pick two or three up out of them.  We are looking for cover, last year we had Elliott Bennett with Danny Racchi as cover, this year we only have Danny and Mike Jones so we are looking at a winger and cover for full backs because we only have Scotty and Dave Buchanan."

"They maybe different types of opposition, but Radcliffe Borough will be up for it on Monday night.  Its always a tough game, even when I played we played them and it was always a tough game then and I am not expecting any different this year but the most important thing is that we get through these games without any injuries.  We think the players are well prepared and pre-season is going well.  It's a mixture of ball work and a bit of running and on the evidence on Friday night, they do look pretty sharp."

"It was a decent crowd and well worth putting the game on.  My first reaction was no to the game because I didn't want to play Everton in the first game but I am delighted and it was a really good fixture for us."
