You don't panic after one defeat

Posted on: Sun 09 Aug 2009

'Obviously I'm disappointed and a little shell shocked, but there isn't much I can do about that now.   The score doesn't lie but the worst thing is that it is 3-0 at home.  I said last week that the game at Fleetwood would hopefully be a wake up call, but this definitely is."

"That's my worst defeat since I took over.  They had two shots from outside the box and they went in, last year that didn't happen, but this is a different year.  It doesn't matter what happened last season.  It's a new season but they were two very good strikes, but in-between that there was a pretty poor goal."

"There isn't too much you can do about the first goal, he struck the ball really well, especially when I thought we were playing fairly well.  That goal kind of knocked us, and then the second goal really did knock us.  The third goal killed the game."

"Ryan Lowe did put the ball in the back of the net, but the officials said he was offside when someone else shot and the ball deflected to him, he was already offside.  If that had been given then we can say this that and the other.  The reality is that it was 0-3.  Everything counts on what happens in the penalty box, they scored three and we didn't."

"The back eight players have played together for a year and obviously it's disappointing, especially at home where we need to be good.  A 3-0 defeat isn't great and it leaves us with plenty to do.  There were a couple of things highlighted and we know what we need to do."

"There is a long way to go, nobody has ever been promoted or relegated on their first game.  You look at some of the results today and there are some strange results, but this result - you look at it and realise that there is plenty of work to do."

"We got David Worrall on in the second half, he did make a difference, he's a lively player, and he's full of energy and full of running.  We think he's going to be a decent player for us.  He can't play on Tuesday and there is nothing we can do about that, so he will be in contention next Saturday."

"Andy Morrell has trained with us for the last two days, though he probably needs a game.  Andy Bishop has just started running so we are probably looking at another two weeks before he gets in."

"You don't panic after one defeat, that's really important that just because you've lost, its important not to panic, I am convinced that what we try to do is the right way.  Sometimes people think they are a little bit better than they really are.  They play to a system and do as they are told, then usually they are ok."

"We play with a system, we have a system with the ball, a system without the ball and it's fairly obvious that for the three goals we didn't do very well.  It's a simple game, I don't have to spice it up, and it's pretty obvious that at both ends, Bournemouth were better than us."
