We just capitulated

Posted on: Sat 29 Aug 2009

"It was as bad for me as I suspect it was for the supporters after that second half.  The best team won, but in the second half - once they scored the first, they looked like they would score more when ever they attacked.   There is plenty to work on and we know where the problem lies."

"It's the second time this season we've had three goals scored against us and to be fair it could have been more but Wayne Brown was excellent.  There is plenty to work on, but I want to know why, what's the reason."

"I didn't think there was much in it in the first half, they had the possession but without anybody really creating any chances, then in the second half once they scored the first goal, which was a poor goal to concede, we just capitulated."

"You do go for it once they score, but within reason.  When they score one there is still plenty of the game to go.  Rochdale are a really good team with their counter attack, so if you throw bodies forward the chances are you are going to get caught if you lose the ball.  We did get caught and they used the ball really well, certainly a lot better than we did."

"A 3-0 defeat doesn't look good, whether it's a derby game or not.  It's good that we already have six points on the board, but Saturday just wasn't good enough at all.  We work on a game plan, and it shouldn't go out of the window when you go a goal down.  You stick to the game plan.  There's not a lot else to say, you've seen what I've seen and it's plainly obvious that there is plenty of work to be done."

"I had to play Tom Newey.  He is lacking match fitness but we think he will be a valuable addition to the squad.  He will get sharper and he does give us cover and competition.  We thought David Buchanan would be ok for Saturday's game up until Wednesday.  He's had some treatment on it and went through a fitness test on Friday but he was miles away.  Mike Jones will be around four weeks; he's done his ligaments in his ankle.  Danny Racchi now has an injury and Andy Morrell went over on his ankle.  You just have to get through it."

"There is about 48 minutes of things that have to improve.  Rochdale looked like they would score, we didn't.  We have performed in the past, but the past counts for nothing.  The supporters make their way over and get behind the players and that's the disappointing thing for me.  They came here in great numbers and in great voice and we put on a performance like that, it unbelievably disappointing but its only the first month of the season.  We are five games in with six points out of fifteen.  It's not ideal, we wanted more but there is plenty to build on and plenty to work on."

"We are better than that, but you are only as good as your last performance.  If you walk into a game thinking you are better then you are going to get a shock and we got a shock in the second half for no reason.  In the second half you can step up a gear or step off a gear.  For me, we stepped off a gear and stepped backward instead of stepping forwards and we allowed them to play."

"That second half performance is pretty difficult to take in at the moment and I have to apologise to our supporters that came in so many numbers.  The performance just isn't good enough if you want to be competitive in this league."
