Keep your feet on the ground

Posted on: Mon 28 Sep 2009

"Ryan Lowe is a top finisher and his record speaks for itself, you give him three chances, you know that he will take at least one of them and on Saturday - he had three chances.  His goal was a really difficult finish but he made it look easy.  I'm delighted with the result and especially delighted to see the second goal go in because everyone was edgy and panicking a little bit, but it just lifts the tension."

"You could feel the tension from the start and if we are not winning at half time, there are a few in the crowd that do moan about it.  Unfortunately that goes with what we do.  The expectation here has risen incredibly and we have to live with that.  The second half on Saturday - we were fantastic.  We passed the ball like we know we can.  The desire to get forward to win the game was there.  That's all we ask for is that the players have the desire to win the game and they showed that.It doesn't matter if the goal comes in the first minute or the 89th minute; as long as we have that then I will take it."

"Nobody that came on Saturday can say that the players are not trying or are not giving everything.  I thought they were excellent and in the second half, I thought we just steam rollered them.  It took great courage form the players because it was nervous and tense, yet I don't remember seeing too many running away from the ball.  They wanted the ball.  They believe in what we are telling them when somebody throws a system at us, then this is how you break it down."

"Andy Bishop is obviously not firing on all cylinders at the moment, but we know that he is not 100%.  He is struggling.  His game isn't all about Andy Bishop.  We have spoken about it and he is trying to rectify some knocks.  Since I've been here, I don't think he's ever been fully fit, there's always been something whether its knee, groin, hernia or the other.  He's still coming back.  We have to be patient, we know he's a top player and a top goal scorer at this level, but we have to be patient with him because he is trying his best."

"Wayne Brown did make a great save during the game, and the things that have cost us at home previous to Saturday such as a lack of concentration - for the last two games, we haven't had that.  The game isn't 90 minutes, its 95 or 96 minutes, and they have to be at your best for that.  The last two games, we haven't conceded, we've had something to build from and we've scored three goals."

"Ryan Cresswell is available for Tuesday but we are not sure about Paul Scott.  We also thought Andy Morrell would be back with us this week but he trained on Tuesday and took another knock on his ankle.  Scotty has tweaked a thigh in training on Thursday.  We have a squad, we are not flushed with money and we have to work within the squad.  We asked David Buchanan to play right back and I thought he was absolutely excellent.  He gives us energy and a will to win; he drives the team forward from the full back position."

Now it's Crewe on Tuesday and again, very difficult.  I saw them at Accrington on Friday night. It was a very strange game but I have to say that Accrington were fantastic.   They were enthusiastic and committed.  It went to 2-0 straight away, then back to 2-1 and you think that Crewe could be back in the game because they do have some quality in their squad, but Accrington got the third and killed the game, but within the Crewe team, there are some really good players."

"We are four points off the play offs, but everyone seems to want to know how many we are from the bottom.  All of a sudden we've gone form being in crisis to here we go again.  You have to keep your feet on the ground.  Sometimes things are not going to go for you and you just have to have belief in each other as a group, and I think we do.  We try our very best to maintain that.  We've done different things, brought in some extra staff, changed some routines and its now showing a benefit.  Now we just have to keep doing exactly what we are doing.  If we can not concede, then we will score."
