The keeper won the game for us

Posted on: Sun 18 Oct 2009

"The emotion at the end was one of relief to be honest.  It seems that every time we go to Aldershot, it's always an exciting game for the neutral.  There are always goals and in the first half it could have almost been 'we score - they score'.  We had possession and then they had possession and it was way too open.  Again in the second half, it was way too open but the good thing is that we came back twice in a place where not many teams win.  It was fantastic again from the players and they showed a great desire not to lose, and then we took the three points."

"That desire not to lose hasn't really been away, though on Saturday I don't think we played as well as can.  In the first half we were all over the place and Wayne Brown kept us in the game.  He was fantastic and won us the game."

"Wayne will be the first one to say that he's had a slight wobble, but he is still a top goalkeeper at this level.  It's a goalkeeper's life that they go through a patch like this, but I've never doubted the talent that he has and there he was on Saturday - winning the game for us, he was fantastic from start to finish and we are all pretty thankful that he was in such form."

"The hardest thing for any keeper is to remain positive in your own mind.  We can keep saying the same thing to him, but I would imagine, and I've never been in that position as a goal keeper, that it must be the loneliest position.  Outfield there is plenty to help you, but a keeper - when you make a mistake - the net behind you ripples.  You have to be strong mentally and Wayne Brown has certainly come back from that, now we hope he carries that on."

"I said a lot to them at half time; it was no different to what I said to them at the start of the first half.  We never came out and at the back; the first job is to be a defender - not a footballer.  We were caught in possession with no cover whatsoever and subsequently, it looked terrible but we did a lot better in the second half, but we can be a lot better than that.  The game was so open, but the good thing is that we were more than a match for them.  When we get the ball we can pass it and move it, its just once we are out of possession, we have to be better."

"We have attacking players and it is difficult for them to be better and to learn that once we lose possession we need a shape that we can press from.  Aldershot are a good side.  We came here last year and it finished 3-3, on Saturday it could have been 6-6.  We went 3-2 but it could have easily been 6-6 and no-one could have moaned about it.  Obviously I am thankful that we are going home with the three points but again, it was another fantastic effort from the players."

"We can't change anything, you look at the Aldershot bench and they could change it around, we couldn't and especially at the top end of the pitch.  The two strikers work really hard for us, they need a rest but we just can't do that.  The good thing is that we are winning."

"We've lost one away game since February.  I don't think there are any teams in any league that has that record.  That's now five away wins and it's probably the best in the league.  For us to be where we want to be, we have to continue that, but we just have to better from the start."
