Gaffer reflects on injuries

Posted on: Fri 23 Oct 2009

"Ryan Lowe hasn't trained this week with tight hamstrings, Mike Jones hasn't trained because of a foot injury he got at Aldershot last weekend but we will wait and see and hope that they are both ok for tomorrow, hopefully they will be.   David Worrall though walked off the training ground on Thursday with a knee problem and that doesn't look good.I think he is doubtful for Saturday."

"Training is becoming almost five a side at the moment.  We arranged a friendly reserve game at Oldham earlier this week and four of the first team played in that one, and that left me with just eight players training on Tuesday.  It's difficult and it does restrict you on what you can do.  We want to do more functional stuff but we just can't because we are worried that any challenges will bring more injuries."

"We took Max Harrop from the youth team to Aldershot with us last weekend.  He's a first year scholar that has plenty of ability, left footed and he's done really well.  We just thought lets take him, there is quite a few there, especially in the first years and I think its right that if we have the space that we should take them.  He's trained with us and not looked out of place, so we've introduced him and showed him what it's going to be like.  It will be the same for the others as well.  We are low on numbers and it's almost like the pros are training with the youth team at the moment."

"We showed great character last weekend to come from behind twice, though the start of the game wasn't too pleasing for me, but in the end it was a great result for us at a place that is really tough to go and get a result.  Aldershot are a tough team to play against and you could see why they are up at the top of the league.  They just go for it and you have to be solid, then when you get the ball, you go for it as well.  I expect it was a good game to watch for the neutral, but not too entertaining from the manager's point of view."

"It could have easily been 6-6 at half time.  If we had done better around their box, we could have easily scored and they could have easily scored more.  It wasn't that great for the managers but it was great entertainment for League Two Football."

"With all these injury problems we have, it does bring what's left closer.  There is no help, this is it, and this is what's left.  We can't go out and get loads of players like other teams are around us.  We are all in this together and that's how we will move on.  It wasn't the biggest squad at the start of the season, but to lose three of your four strikers and then bits and bobs around that does hurt.  There is only one way to get out of it and that's by sticking together and fighting your way out of it."

"Now we need to sort out this home record, but it is against a pretty good team.  I've watched them a few times this season, plus I have DVD's of recent games and they are a strong side.  They should be though, they are spending money on two strikers and nobody else in the league can afford to do that.  They have a squad of 24 or 25 players that have all played in this league, there are no kids in there squad.  They should be up there and they are a good side."

"Ronnie Moore was the manager when I played there and it was Ronnie that gave me the opportunity to be their youth coach.  He was excellent and I've learnt a lot of things from Ronnie.  Ronnie is at his best on a Saturday, when its eleven v eleven - he is excellent and at half time he has the ability to change things really well and as a result, he got the best out of a bunch of players that as they went up through the league who were not the most talented, but they gave their most for him.  He did a fantastic job at Rotherham, and then unbelievably got the sack at Tranmere.  It was incredible; nobody in football could believe that."
