We can play better

Posted on: Fri 30 Oct 2009

"Last weekend was excellent; they just go out there and play.  We just ask them to go out there and to do what they are good at, we don't ask them to do anything other than be good at what I think there strengths are.  It's very rare that I want to clap the lads after a performance, but some of the play that they performed on Saturday; I just wanted to clap them because I thought it was so good.  Our backs are against the wall at the moment and they came out and battled against one of the top teams in this league.  It wasn't just a battle; it was a battle with some pretty good football in it."

"I was proud of the players last weekend, the effort and commitment they showed, and the desire to win the game was fantastic.  The performance didn't really surprise me, that was out eighth on the trot.  As each week goes past, I think we are playing better.  As a manager you are always wary that it is going to end soon.  Maybe it will, but we know now that the players are more than capable of producing that sustained performance over a long period because they have shown it all ready."

"The game was a squad performance.  The players that don't play are as important as the players that are in the team.  They are the ones that keep pushing, though it is difficult for them now, especially when the team is on a run like we are on now.  They can't see a way of getting in the team.  Richie Baker was on the bench on Saturday; he got on and did really well.  That's what I want, but it definitely all about a squad, not just the team."

"It was a good performance, but I think we can play better.  It wasn't a perfect 90 minutes, and it doesn't matter who you are, it's very rare that you get a perfect 90 minutes, but we are heading in the right direction.  Considering everything that we have been through, at the same time last season - we are now a point better off and a position better off.  From a poor start, we have recovered really well."

"Burton Albion may be new to the league, but they are not an unknown quantity.  Paul has a very good side.  I watched them pre-season against Derby County and they played really well, I also watched them against Rochdale and again they played well.  They can be a bit hit and miss at times, but they are a good side and they do have good players.  They are strong at set pieces, and it doesn't seem they like playing Chesterfield."

"Looking at the numbers that are booking the coach for Saturday, we should also have a large away following with us for the game.  Hopefully we can continue this run and give them all something to cheer about.  It's a difficult place to go but we are playing pretty well at the moment."

"The run will end eventually, we all know that.  When it does end, you start another one.  All we are doing is trying to get into a position around January, and then I am pretty sure that we will have the majority of the players' back.  Competition for places will be better and I am hoping that we can kick on.  Maybe even if we are in a good position, we will find some money from somewhere and bring some more players in, because that's when we will need it."
