We knew what was coming

Posted on: Sat 28 Nov 2009

"We both go and watch a lot of games every week, and that maybe does involves Bournemouth or Torquay on a Tuesday night. It's whatever part of the country that needs it.You have to, it's either watching the opposition or watching a prospective player. It's the nature of the beast and one of the reasons why you understand that it does take up your time and your energy to make sure that you do this part of the job, that's ultimately why we do it."

"The Notts County performance - do the fans expect that same level of performance every week?Possibly yes, it's a sign of the times that we are playing in.We were not disappointed on Tuesday night, you look at the conditions and Chesterfield are an extremely good team and we have watched them a few times this season. We knew what they were all about and the way we approached it in the first half was to set out stall out and it was just what we expected."

"Its not always champagne football, on a cold Tuesday night at Gigg Lane, it's not always going to be like that.We certainly don't expect it.We expect a level of performance and in the first half - we did the ground work to set us up for the second half.We believe in what we are doing, the players do and if there are moans and groans - well, so be it but they will understand what we are trying to do.We have to be strong in what we believe.Everyone is entitled to an opinion.Whatever comes from the stands is the nature of the beast.Top England players take that week in week out from 40,000.We do believe in what we are doing and as long as we continue along the same lines that we do then I am sure the crowd will think of promotion when its not all been champagne football."

"That Notts County game was a good game, if I was a neutral coming to that game then I would have been entertained.I've said this to many people, but I would gladly pay to watch us at the moment. There aren't many games of football that I would actually say that but from top to bottom, there are not many that I can say I've been entertained. There isn't many places for this type of money that you can say I've been entertained. The entertainment from that one game was fantastic. If anyone came away from that game saying that they hadn't been entertained, then they are not football fans."

"The first four months are gone now.We knew in the summer that it would be tough, we knew what was coming. The level of expectation was raised, there was always going to be an aftershock from the play offs.It was frustrating and with one or two new players coming in we knew what needed and what was going to happen."

"It hurt us all with the start that we did have because we expected a little bit more and took stock. We quickly took stock after the Accrington game and got our heads together, we revaluated, still believed in what we were going to do but we just had to tweak one or two things. We quickly did that and have reaped the benefits since. The plan is still the same, we are always looking at strengthening. We didn't stand still but we what we wanted to do and will continue to do - is test the players, we always test ourselves on a daily basis, not weekly, not monthly but on a daily basis."
