A disappointing night

Posted on: Wed 02 Dec 2009

"3-0 away from home is disappointing.  It was always going to be whoever scored the first goal.  It was a dubious penalty.  The referee says it's nailed on but I am not quite sure, the players have all said it wasn't but he gives it.  Then the second goal, a poor goal and there's not much you can do about it.  Futch is running back to his own goal trying to get his head on it and it goes past the keeper.  It's not a good night, a disputed penalty, we go two down and we have to change the shape and go for the game, but then get caught - it's pretty disappointing."

"We had a good chance at the other end; we had a few good opportunities but didn't make the best of them.  Danny Nardiello hit the post in the first half and I thought we looked comfortable.  We looked sharp on the counter attack and looked dangerous around there box, and then for fifteen or twenty minutes we did exactly what we are supposed not to do.  The first goal was always going to be difficult in the conditions and it proved that way."

"We said there would be one goal in it, and the chances are that whoever got it would go on and win the game.  Unfortunately it was Morecambe, but I'm just disappointed with the way the goal came.  It was a corner and usually we come out when the ball is played back, we never moved and then its on the edge of the box, headed back in and hits Tom Newey.  He didn't have much opportunity to shift out of the way.  Then we had an opportunity at the other end to have a strike on goal and the lad blocks it with his arms but that's accidental apparently."

"I didn't see the difference, the referee obviously does but he's the one that makes the decisions, he has to justify that decision.  Its one defeat in twelve games, its not a great result - it's a pretty poor result but we all know that there are plenty of games left."

"The conditions were horrendous.  This is league two, we can't always play in the Emirates every week where there's no breeze, so we have to get used to these conditions.  It's how you adapt and in the first half I thought we adapted really well.  The early part of the second half we looked sharp and moved the ball around, but for that 15 or 20 minutes, we just didn't and we allowed them to step onto us."

"When we had the opportunity to keep the ball and move it, we didn't, we wanted to do something else.  Now we have to take it and move on quickly."

"Mike Jones has hurt his knee, around two weeks ago we trained on Astroturf and he hit his knee against one of the boards but played two ninety minutes after it.  Then on Monday we started a jog to warm up before training and he can't run on the knee.  Obviously I'm not happy with that, he's a top player for us and we do miss him when he's not in the team.  The sooner he comes back the better.  He had a scan on the knee on Tuesday morning and we are waiting for the results, hopefully it won't be too long."

"Tom Elliott is nowhere near now; we probably won't get him back now before his loan runs out.  He's had a setback with his hamstring; his loan finishes on the 19th so we don't think he will come back now."
