We've made offers

Posted on: Tue 22 Jun 2010

"We offered deals to Ryan Cresswell and Brian Barry-Murphy, but they have both gone elsewhere.   We just cant do anything about that.  With Brian you just have to say good luck, he's moved up a league and that's quality for him at 31.  It was never over money for him.  The deal we offered him was virtually the same that he has been offered in league one.  He told me that he has really enjoyed his time here, but he wants to take that chance at playing higher, so he has to go and do that.  He deserves it because he's been brilliant whilst I have been here."

"Its the same for Stephen Dawson, they both worked really well together and worked hard together but now they are playing in a higher division so good luck to them.  The disappointing one was Ryan Cresswell because we thought we'd done a lot of work with him, and eventually it was paying off.  It has been frustrating but it was paying off.  When we think we've got the player and made him a decent offer, plus there were other things that we were going to do to help him, he decides to go to Rotherham.  He lives in Rotherham and that swayed it for him, he doesn't have to travel everyday.  With Dawson, it wasn't a surprise, we expected it but it was a surprise with BBM."

"We've tried to get in touch with David Buchanan, but cannot get hold of him but we will keep trying, but sooner or later, he has to get in touch with us.  We cant do any more with him until we or he gets in touch.  Tom Newey is away on his honeymoon so we will speak to him when he gets back.  Efe Sodje was in on Monday and hopefully we can do something with him.  Andy Morrell has just come back from holiday so we will speak to him soon."

"We are getting somewhere replacing the players that have left, we will be making some offers to players today (Monday) and then see what happens.  Obviously we've lost the midfield, its a priority for us, but it was before.  We knew we were losing Dawson so  its not changed.  We've spoken to five or six midfield players and we've had a pretty good reaction from all of them, so now we will put some offers to maybe two or three of them."

"We are not really missing out on players to other clubs.  Its really been a different summer.  If you look across the board, there hasn't been many players that have signed for clubs yet.  There really is very little money about.  Players are waiting and waiting to see if they can get x amount of pounds more, but there isn't too much money about.  We will have to wait and see and we are hopeful.  We are back in on the 01st July and hopefully we will have two or three in, then it might take another two weeks.  Plus we will also have some trialists coming in."

"This year we've had a lot of players out of contract, plus I wanted a change anyway.  I knew what was going to happen, I knew we had a lot out of contract and that it would take a lot more time to sort out than it did last year.  The offers that we have made to the players.  Usually we make good offers, but this year we made offers that we knew would take some thinking about."

"We had an enquiry from Grimsby on Andy Bishop, and that's about it really.  It was just an enquiry, and obviously we told Bish.  At the end of the day its Andy's decision, but Grimsby was just an enquiry, they were not coming in to buy him, but for me - I want him to stay, and the good thing is that he wants to stay, so as of now, he has two years left on his contract and I don't want him to leave, he's a top player.  He had a difficult season last year, but I am expecting him to have a great season this time.  It wouldn't be a pre-season without some speculation about Andy Bishop, even when he has been out injured.  If somebody makes a bid for him, then we have to seriously consider it, but I don't think we are in the business of letting anybody go for absolutely nothing."

"Everything is ready for pre-season and the pre-season games are coming thick and fast.Burnley are going abroad for their pre-season but they have agreed to come here and play us before they go.  That was an easy one for us.  Huddersfield will probably be one of the better teams in league One whilst Leeds have just been promoted and will be a really good test for us.  We thought about the Rochdale game and then out of the blue we get a phone call from them asking for a game."

"The Carling Cup draw is good for us and my step son is a Sheffield Wednesday supporter so he is happy with the draw, but hopefully he wont be happy on the night.  It's a great game for us.  They've just come down to League One.  If you are going to play any of them, then great they will give us a good test.  From a financial point of view, they are one of the bigger clubs so we will benefit from that."
