Fit, strong and mobile

Posted on: Wed 28 Jul 2010

"It was a good work out for us, but I don't think we will get too carried away by it because obviously it wasn't their first team.  It was still a good test for the lads though and I thought we were pretty good in the end.

You can only beat what is put in front of you, and the three goals we scored were really good goals.  The first two goals, you probably wont see a better strike with a left foot anywhere, I'll be surprised if you do.  The ball into the box from Andy Haworth into the box is an unbelievable ball for Bishop to score from, it was a great finish, and again with Mike Jones at the end, just a really good finish.  I'm delighted and its another one gone.  Most of the players got some good minutes on the field and we do look fit and strong, and more importantly, mobile which is a big thing for us.

I would have preferred a full strength Rochdale of course, but obviously Keith Hill has his own plans.  It was a different sort of game for us because they wanted to keep the ball, and we had to keep our shape.  It was a good exercise for us because once we did get the ball, we had to move it quickly and go forward quickly.  I thought we did that pretty well and the first half has probably we caused them more and more problems. They are a really technical team, but once we came to terms with them, we coped really well.

The pleasing thing for me was that when you look at the Teamsheet, you turn off.  We didn't and after the first 20 minutes we got into the game and looked pretty bright and sharp.  Our work ethic from the whole team was pretty good, the passing was very good and we do have some good technical players.  We have more pace about us know and directness.  It's all going to plan at the moment, but that obviously counts for nothing.  We've come out of the game with no injuries which is important.

We have the same squad as Rochdale - not the biggest, but we are always open to add as soon as possible.  We've made a decision on Kyle Bennett, and that decision is yes, we are going to take him.  We looked and looked at him, even last season when we looked at him and we think the physical side of the game might be a problem for him, but he is an exciting player to watch.  When he picks the ball up he excites and I like those sorts of players.  We've sat him down and talked to him, hopefully we can work with him.  He knows the situation and the chances are that he wont be starting many games, he will be here as a squad player and if he does well, then he will play.

If he is anything like his brother (Elliott Bennett) then there will be a determination about him, a desire and a belief in his own ability, then he will push what's in front of him.  He knows us, he was here most Saturdays watching Elliott when he was here, he knows how we work and it was Elliott that phoned me through the summer about him.  I'm delighted and its his chance to get into the league.  He's played a lot of reserve team football but now its his chance in the league.  Technically he is really good.  When he comes off the bench, you give him the ball and he is that impact, defenders won't like him.

We were all worried about his size but he has really good feet and we hope that he will develop really well.  We've not offered him terms yet, but he knows that a deal is coming.  Its my fault because I should have done it before now, I was away at the weekend, in a meeting on Monday and just haven't got around to it yet, so I will ring him on Wednesday and have a chat about money and then take it from there.  The good thing is that he wants to come to us and to develop with us.  The example for him is his brother.

We are hopeful that we have somebody coming in at right back, but we have been saying that for three weeks now.  Phil Picken is an option and for me its an option where he can cover right back, left back and I've even see him play centre midfield.  He's only 24 but a really tough kid, determined and brilliant in training.  He thinks he can get better.

We are also going to offer terms to Lennell John-Lewis, he's 19 or 20 and a powerful player, but we have seen enough in training.  He can play anywhere across the front and he caused us problems when he was at Lincoln last season.  I've always liked him.  A few of them will also play at Ramsbottom United tonight before we make any more decisions.
