Almost the complete performance

Posted on: Wed 11 Aug 2010

'We did everything but score; I thought we were excellent from start to finish.  The performance was so much better than Saturday but it really should be Bury through to the next round.  We had some great chances and to be fair we moved the ball so well we used the size of the pitch very well.  It was almost the complete performance.

Obviously the goal against was disappointing, but we are playing against top class players, but we did enough there to show that we are a pretty good team.  Giles Coke came on at half time and I thought he made a difference.  He's got a bit of pace about him and he's a good footballer.  We just didn't deal with him for the goal.  He came inside Phil Picken and we weren't quick enough to close the space.

Even after that, Andy Bishop hit the bar and we've done everything but put the ball in the back of the net.  We had no luck whatsoever, but the performance - if we put in more performances like that, then we will be pretty happy.

Somebody is going to get it if we carry on playing like that.  Our performance level has to be like that.  To be applauded off at Hillsborough by the Sheffield Wednesday fans like that is pretty good.  Obviously I know the club because I live in Sheffield and there is not many away teams get applauded off like that.

They are applauding our football, because at times, it was football.  That's what we came here to do.  We didn't go to Hillsborough to be defensive, we didn't go there with any other plan than let's go and show everybody how we can play.

If we had won the game, we wouldn't have nicked it.  We should have been three up in the first half but it wasn't to be.  We will take credit and be pleased with the performance but now we have to turn those performances into wins.  The lads have set an unbelievable standard now and if we can keep reaching that standard then we will do pretty well this year.

Sheffield had a really good team out and there are some top players there, but they couldn't stop us.  Some of the movement, some of the passing and some of the play was really good.  I'm delighted that we went and put on a performance but obviously disappointed with the result because we should be going through to the next round of the Carling Cup.

The defence were excellent; Tom Lees is going to be a really good player.  I've picked Tom out, but I have to say that about all the players.  Because we do have such a young side, it was a big test for us.  We want them to come and express themselves and show everybody that they are good players.  I was worried before the game because it's a big occasion for some of them; it's a difficult place to come to.  We saw them watering the pitch and you think they are going to pass it yet we didn't go backwards, we went forwards and kept going forwards.

The pleasing part for me is that we kept going forward the right way by passing the ball around the opposition.  It doesn't matter who you play against, if you've got good technicians' like we have, then it's difficult for the opposition.

We opened them up as good as I have seen since I have been in charge at Bury.  It was probably the best performance that I have ever been in charge of.  That's the frustration because it's forgotten to quickly.  I'm disappointed because we wanted to do well in the cup, but we move on.  For confidence after Saturday, it's pretty good.'
