FREEVIEW VIDEO: We know what to expect

Posted on: Fri 13 Aug 2010

"We are two games in, but we've got loads of positives to take from both games.  I've reflected on Saturdays game and obviously we wanted to be better on Tuesday night.  We did that, we were better, we are just missing the final piece which unfortunately is the most important piece - putting the ball in the back of the net.  I'm perfectly pleased with how we have played and how we are playing at the moment, and I'm sure everybody else is.

Port Vale are a good side, there are not dimensional but they are really dangerous at set plays and they went on to prove it on Tuesday night by beating QPR.  The goal was never going to come from the first touch, it was always the second touch and we just switched off.  We were unlucky with it, but they had somebody in the right position and it was a good finish.

As a coach or a manager you always look at goals conceded and say yes, we could and should have done something about it.  It should never have been a corner in the first place, but we should have done other things to stop it being a corner.  We didn't deal with that second ball, but the good thing was that we were a lot better at defending set pieces on Tuesday night, again against another big side.

Tuesday was a good performance and the number of people that have phoned me that were at the game, and they have told me that it was as good a performance as they have ever seen from any team.  Again though, we could and should have stopped the goal.  You have to expect top players to do something different and they did to get the goal.  That's why we needed to score, we had plenty of opportunities to do so but it just wouldn't go in or the keeper made some really good saves.  I was pleased with the way we played and the mentality that we showed.  We went for it, we went to play - it doesn't matter who you play against, you go to show the opposition that you are a good side.

I've never ever seen an opposing team clapped off by the Sheffield Wednesday fans.  Quite a few people have said to me that they have never seen that before.  I was very proud of the lads on Tuesday.  They were applauding the football that we played, it was really good and refreshing.  We've set a big benchmark now.  Its not always going to be that sort of football because League Two is a different type of football, but when we can, that's how I want us to play.

Andy Bishop is as sharp as he's ever been, he should have scored a hat trick on Tuesday. He just looks leaner and more fit, more mobile and hopefully it works out for him.

We've set a high standard, the idea now is to maintain those standards.  If we can do it, then we will.  We moved the ball around the pitch so well, when we were in trouble we moved it again and kept it moving, as well as having something at the end of it.  They tried really hard to stop us.  It's great to watch but we all know we need the goals as well.

Obviously I know all about Chris Wilder at Oxford, and he has produced a good team.  They've just won 6-1 against a League One side and we know that they will be flying high.  I know Chris fairly well and he's done a brilliant job there.  When it came to whether or not he should go to Oxford, I told him to take it because it was a real opportunity for him.  Oxford is a massive football club at this level.  Chris couldn't turn it down and I'm pleased for him that everything has gone well for him since he went in there.  He's a really good coach, an honest lad and works really hard so he deserves whatever success he's getting.

It will be an occasion as well with it being their first home game back in the league, they are still buzzing from promotion and from their game on Tuesday night.  For us though, its the next game.  The fact that they are at home means nothing to us.  For us, our occasion is that this is our first away game.

After our performance on Tuesday, confidence is good.  It should be a good game because Oxford will feel the same way.  We are expecting a really tough game.  It's a test for us, they have a big squad and Chris has gone out and signed a lot of players.  We are going not as favourites to win, we are the underdogs so that suits me.'
