We've learnt our lesson

Posted on: Fri 03 Sep 2010

"There is plenty of frustration still around from last weekend, even though we didn't play particularly well - they only had two shot on target, one of them being the free kick that they scored from.  It felt like losing and to not come away with three points was very disappointing.

I thought we had done enough to win the game, especially when you go 1-0 up.  I just couldn't see Barnet scoring and I said after the game, that we should have walked away with a 1-0 win, a scruffy 1-0 after not playing very well.  We didn't move the ball as well as we wanted to.  Sometimes you can't move it as well as you want to, but when you are 1-0 up, then you should see the game out and take the points.

I said after the game that bravery cost us the game, you can also add naivety to that.  I'm hopeful that it wont happen again.  After the game, the players were pretty disappointed in the dressing room with what had happened.  These are young players and you learn from making mistakes.  A mistake was made and hopefully we will learn from that.

There was a lot of talk after the game, a lot of disappointment and with the way the goal had gone in.  Barnet didn't really cause us a problem.  Cameron made one save during the game, and apart from that they caused us no problems.

I was excepting a big backlash from Barnet after losing 7-0 the week before, but it wasn't to be.  At the same time, we didn't do enough to make the game comfortable.  Cameron hasn't really had a lot to do in all of the games so far, but I don't really like to say it.  We do look quite strong defensively and we haven't been taken apart by anybody yet.  It's the other way that is the problem, we are creating chances but are not taking them and scoring the goals.

The transfer deadline passed without incident, and I'm delighted about that.  It really doesn't have any affect on clubs like us whatsoever. Its irrelevant to us.

We had no reserve game this week, so we arranged one with Retford Town to get some game time into the players.  It was a good pitch and a very good workout for the players and another 90 minutes for most of them.  We had two trialists in the game and they offered quite a bit to us, so we will get them back in on Friday and have a good look at them.

Undefeated in three, but only one win is disappointing.  We were ahead in one game at Barnet and had the majority of the game against Northampton.  We should have two or three points more than we have now, but we are where we are.  We have to be better, its as simple as that.  The good thing is that the payers know that and they believe that they should be better.  Now we have to prove that on the pitch.

Andy Bishop has trained on Thursday and Friday and will be ok for the game on Saturday.  Danny Carlton got a slight groin tweak in the game on Wednesday night, but it was just a small tweak so we took him off.  There are no other injuries.

The expectation at Gillingham will be massive, because they were relegated last season.  When they were in League Two the season before, they had one of the biggest squads in the league, and from looking at the back of the programme, still have one of the biggest squads.  The expectation from their is to go straight back up.  Their squad suggests that they are capable of doing that.  They haven't had the best of starts but they are a capable team and do have some really good players.  All the games are dangerous for us, it doesn't matter if they have won or not.  They are all dangerous, so you have to approach the game exactly the same way as any other game.

As far as I am concerned, they are the best team in the league and you have to go into the game as though they are the best team in the league.  It's for us to be up there, and when you look at their squad list - it is a huge squad.  Somebody told me the other day that they had nine players out injured, but they can still put a decent side out.

They signed Adebayo Akinfenwa over the summer and he caused us one or two problems last season when he was at Northampton.  He's strong and powerful, he's scored goals where ever he's been.  He's waited his time and gone to Gillingham, he will be a handful, but so are we.'
