It was entertaining

Posted on: Mon 06 Sep 2010

'I read some of Andy Hessenthaler's interview earlier in the week and he was speaking about how strong defensively his side were, then I had said something similar and that we didn't look as though anyone could open us up - then we get that - 5-4, but the good thing for me is that we scored five goals, and we probably could have had more than that, and against the team that everybody fancies to do well this season.

They have one of the strongest squads in the league and for us to score five against them is fantastic, now we just have to learn to keep the four goals against out.The four goals were not the greatest goals in the world. It's pretty basic that a long throw, or a corner or set play.In any league, but probably more so in this one, its about set plays. They are massive and we didn't deal with it but the good thing is, we scored five.

I've got to praise the players and have a go at them.We do not walk away and say a win is a win, because its not. We've conceded four goals at set plays, and we haven't done that all season. Before Saturday, it was only three set plays, so we have to be better than that.

With ten or 15 minutes to go I asked Andy if he would take a 4-4 draw, you probably would do at that stage.I cant remember what he said, but to score the fifth was good.We changed the team and it obviously helped, maybe we should have done it earlier, but the younger players such as Tom Lees, Joe Skarz, Phil Picken etc, they have to be in that situation to be better.Even though I want to win the game, but I want them to develop and they have to know what its like and what they have to do in that situation, otherwise they are not going to know and they are not going to be better.

We won't come up against McCammon and Akinfenwah again until we play them again. They are a real handful and they changed the game for them, justthrough their physical presence. We have to be better at working against that sort of team and approach. The good thing is, even though they scored four - we scored five and they were pretty good goals, especially the last one.

Andy Bishop and Ryan Lowe have gone somewhere to proving that they are the best strikers in the league. The first goal, Bish just kept going. He didn't know where the ball was and when he did, it was knocked off the line but he recovered and put it in.The second was a penalty, a great ball into the box, Andy got onto his shoulder. He got in front of the defender and whether he pulled or pushed him I don't know, but he's gone down and its a penalty.Even at 2-0 you know that its such a dangerous position to be in.

If we come out and be positive and go 3-0, then its over. But we don't, we went a little negative straight from the kick off. They didn't do as they were told.We said to them, get the ball and play and in there half, but we didn't - we invited the ball to them and the pressure. You know what's coming. At times you can't stop it, you just have to deal with it a lot better.

It's a fantastic win because. We played Gillingham and they have nine players out with injury. They have nine players out and can still put a team out like that.If we had nine players missing, then we would be struggling. It was a fantastic effort from the players. They showed a fantastic desire after every set back.We go in front, then there's a set back and again. We kept going forward. We can score goals.Hopefully its not 5-4 every week, if it is, so be it, that's how we have got to play. We've got to go forward and we've got to try and score.

The final goal fro Lowey was a great finish. The pair of them worked really hard and I am so pleased for Andy Bishop to get two goals. He looked like he was back to his best in pre-season, then a little bit of a dip. He's had chances and not scored, but on Saturday he got two.He could have had a third with the chance in the first half. His head could have gone down then, but he didn't, he kept going and got his rewards in the end.

We are 7th in the league now, I thought we should have been 7th before Saturday because we have dropped points that we shouldn't have, but we are there now. After 5 games we are 7th, lets see where we are at the end of the month - because its a pretty tough month. Its the first win at home and that's massive, it was an entertaining game and something to shout about. When it went to 4-4 the crowd got behind us again, and it gave the players a boost. We are trying to go forward and be an attacking side.
