Looking forward to Rochdale

Posted on: Fri 27 Jan 2012

'Sadly the main talking point from last weekend wasn't the three points, but it's all calmed and settled down now. It was pretty much done by half past five on Saturday night. I had a good talk with them both on the Monday, but they had pretty much sorted it out between themselves plus I had a long chat with Giles on the phone on Sunday. He was very remorseful and had realised what he had done. He knew that he had let himself and everyone else down and everything had moved on.

Unfortunately though, due to the amount of coverage that certain things get - because they need to fill time - it ended up with more coverage than we had hoped. We needed to make it yesterdays chip paper quickly, there is always something else that they can move onto quickly but I believe discussions are ongoing about who is taking the next penalty, though the discussion did not last long.

They both had a good chat the other day. Steven Schumacher is the captain appointed by me, and he is the penalty taker appointed by me. What he says goes.

As for the game, I said afterwards, it should have been over in an hour, maybe even at half time. The pleasing thing for me, despite the fact that we won the game, was I thought we played some really good football. I was disappointed defensive wise, certainly with their two goals. Just before their first goal, they had another opportunity from a similar sort of incident from a free kick into the box. In terms of the way we played, it was really good to see.

Before they got their second goal, we should have been five up anyway.  I would be more worried if we were not creating those sorts of chances and even more worried if we were not playing well. I was just really pleased with the way we played. Now we have another game coming up and within 24 hours of the last game, everyone has forgotten how well we played.

Steven Schumacher has had some soreness with his knee, it's not a knock and he says it's a bit loose. He landed funny on it and he felt it jar a little. It's not as strong as it should be but he has some specific exercises' that he has to do to build the strength back up. He's ok with it and assures me that he will be fine. He was never going to be able to finish the game last weekend, I think we all knew that when he went down. We were going to take him off then, then at half time but he asked for five minutes to see how it was. The feedback from the lads was that he was struggling so he came off eventually, plus Mark Carrington was excellent when he came on.

Last weekend there was three very unlucky players that found themselves sat on the bench. There will be another three or four unlucky players sat on the bench at Rochdale on Saturday. It is a plus point but it becomes very difficult explaining to them why they are not playing.

Now it's Rochdale, it's a local derby. Yes we owe them but you still only get three points for winning the game. They have thrown a big spanner in the works by appointing John Coleman so we've also got to contend with new manager syndrome. I'm sure there will be a few changes in terms of players and maybe even shape to adapt to John's style of play. John Coleman will put his stamp on it and he will be thinking it's a great way to adhere himself to the Rochdale fans by beating their local rivals who are ten places above them and doing the double over us.

John will be thinking that this is a great opportunity for him to write himself into folklore at Rochdale. He will have the bit between his teeth and the players will want to prove to the manager that they want to stay at the football club. The atmosphere will be fantastic and I am sure our fans will be using the word revenge more than we will.

There will probably be as many of our fans as their fans, it will be similar to when they played here and we've seen it already with Sheffield United, Wednesday and Preston. I'm expecting an excellent atmosphere. It's going to be great and hopefully we can get the right result.
