CAPTAIN MARTYN FORREST led his side out at Saltergate this afternoon in front of a bitterly cold biting wind. Various messages on the message board are completely wrong in suggesting that Paul Reid was skipper this afternoon, Reidy was never going to complete the match and Foz retained the armband. For all those wishing to correct their postings and disgraceful attacks on the message board, the link is here.
Manager Andy Preece made one change to today's side. Paul Reid swapped positions with Dave Borley, the young Geordie has been feeling his groin for most of the week and it was decided to make the change after he felt a twinge during the coach trip down the M1 this morning. Before the game commenced a one minutes silence was immaculately observed by everyone in the crowd following the death this morning of Princess Margaret. Full marks to everyone who took part. The home side got the game underway playing in front of a superb gate of just over 5,000. One complete side of the ground was empty whilst the rest of the ground was packed. The Bury broke down the first spireite attack efficiently with Nicky Hill in particular stamping his authority down very early on. The Shakers countered the home sides attacking move by charging at Nathan Abbey's goal with Captain Forrest leading the way. The ball was fed out to Hill, in front of the completely empty stand, young Hilly crossed the ball into the box, but not for the first time this afternoon, the wind had other ideas. The ball sailed well over the heads of Seddon and Newby and out of play for the games first goal kick. On two minutes Mark Innes and Lee Unsworth both chased the same ball, Unsworth won it whilst Innes went down. I did not see any argy bargy with the challenge, and my colleagues in the press box were a little flummoxed as to why Innes was down and in obvious pain. Maybe it's the sniper on the roof - said one Journo! Lee Unsworth took the resulting throw and very sportingly lobbed the ball down the field for Nathan Abbey to collect. The next five minutes saw a brief spell of what I would call semi pressure. Bury had possession but never really created any clear cut chances or indeed got the ball anywhere near the danger zone. Some good pass's and interplay with Newby and Seddon in particular linking up well. Such was the wind that most of Kenny's clearances in the first half ended up with Abbey in the opposite goal catching and punting back up field and into the wind. On ten minutes, and following a good run from Jarrett, George Clegg collected the ball and chipped it over the defence, but the wind assisted the ball and pushed it in front of Jarrett, but Abbey once again benefited from the wind. Seconds later, a loose ball fell to Gaz Seddon, but his powerful drive was easily collected by home keeper Abbey. Sam Collins received a bit of a telling off on 15 minutes after a bad tackle sent Edwards flying over the touch line. The resulting free kick was easily cleared by Unsworth to Seddon who clipped the ball into the wind for Newby to chase, once again though, the wind won. On twenty minutes, the Shakers produced the move of the match. Newby got the ball down the wing before cutting it back to Jason Jarrett on the outside of the box. Two advancing defenders forced Jarrett to volley the ball goalwards and hope for the best. The wind kissed the ball and it easily beat Abbey, who was off his line, the bar however put a mocker on things and the ball smashed the top before rolling out of play for a goal kick. Both sides struggled to adapt to the conditions as the wind gusted down the pitch at varying speeds throughout the match. Jon Newby got a cross over the defence on the half hour, Gareth Seddon controlled the ball with one touch before screwing his shot badly wide and out for another goal kick. Seconds later the home crowd were baying for blood as Danny Swailes took out mark Allott with a lunging tackle. The ref produced a yellow card, much to the surprise of the Spireites faithful who for some reason expected a red! I have to give the troop of young cheerleaders my warmest regards, they performed before the game and again at half time in some very scantily looking uniforms and they must have been bloody freezing - well done girls and well done for looking like you where enjoying it. Apparently they used to be the Sheffield United Cheerleaders, but they sacked them! Bad news came from the dressing room at half time, Danny Swailes has suffered ligament damage and may miss the rest of the season. A scan on Monday will see just how bad the damage is. Mike Nelson came on to replace him. Bury's task was made worse for the second period as they now faced the wind, which seemed to be picking up in force. Just before the hour, a superb ball was whipped into the box by Mark Allott. Jamie Burt, apparently playing with a new pair of contact lenses bought by the caretaker manager, rose superbly and got a magnificent header in, Paddy Kenny should have done better as he saw the ball to late as it nestled into the back of the net. A truly magnificent goal from my vantage point though. Minutes later and Jason Jarrett was having his name taken by the referee for some verbal backchat tot he official. Minutes later and Jarrett was brought down on the edge of the box. Jason dusted himself off and took the kick himself. He delivered the ball towards the box but Payne got his head there first. His clearance fell nicely to Clegg who shot first time. The ball flew true on goal but took a deflection off O'Hare and only just missed the upright and out for a Bury corner. The introduction of young Dave Borley on 70 minutes for the tiring Paul Reid gave Bury a little impetus to move forward and they seemed to be a little more creative. Ten minutes before full time and Bury won a free kick on the edge of the area again. Three players stood over the ball deciding who should take it - Sam Collins, Jason Jarrett and George Clegg. It was Cleggy who took the kick, in a very similar position to his Three minutes before the allocated full time, Skipper Martyn Forrest took the ball from midfield, he got past his defender and shot at goal. Abbey parried the ball to the feet of Nelson, he shot and Abbey again got a hand to it to push the ball up and back to Nelson. He headed the ball back towards goal and into the back of the net. Young Nelse went ballistic and ran the full length of the pitch having removed his shirt in a wild celebration. However, the linesman had seen something wrong and stood ramrod straight by the corner flag with his flag in the air and the referee disallowed the goal. The Bury players, management, Supporters and members of the press were appalled by this decision. Still, once tempers calmed down a little, play got back under way. With two minutes of injury time played, Jamie Burt picked up the ball on the byline and cut inside, he ran across goal and fired a low drive beyond Paddy and into the back of the net to send the vociferous home support into raptures. The full time whistle blew and most of the Bury players ran to the referee to complain about the disallowed goal. An absolutely pointless thing to do, but as I was to find out later, they wanted some sort of explanation. The explanation from the official was that Gareth Seddon had prevented a It still does not make sense and three points have gone, also Captain Marvels run of never having lost as Captain has also gone.
