The Shakers made just one change to the team that lost at Milton Keynes on Saturday with Nicky Adams coming in for Dave Flitcroft. Colin Woodthorpe, amazingly, was passed fit after picking up a horrendous head injury that required six stitches, in the final minutes at the National Hockey Stadium.
The game started at a furious pace and the first worthwhile effort on goal was a Dwayne Mattis effort from 30 yards that went over the bar. Chester had a call for a penalty after 15 minutes when Walters went over after a challenge from John Fitzgerald then seconds later, the same player brought a fine save out of Alan Fettis with a low angled drive.
Drewe Broughton crashed the ball into the side netting after a good ball in from the left by Walters as Chester began to exert themselves. After 24 minutes Nicky Adams did well to leave his marker for dead then sent Jon-Paul Pittman away but his low shot was easy for John Danby in the Chester goal.
City's Jamie Hand was booked for a foul on Dwayne Mattis after 26 minutes.
There was a superb piece of play by Bury in the 28th minute when Woodthorpe, Marc Goodfellow linked up to send Pittman clear but his fine cross was intercepted by Dave Artell with Bishop lurking.
As the ball was delivered back into the area again following a corner after 35 minutes, Chester took the lead when Roberto Martinez reacted first in the box to volley goalwards, the ball ricocheted disastrously off Colin Woodthorpe and past Fettis top break the deadlock.
The visitors were looking ominously strong when, somewhat against the run of play, the Shakers levelled right on half time. Pittman raced down the middle twisted and turned before firing a left-foot effort under the body of Danby.
HALF TIME BURY 1 CHESTER 1
Chester got a great start to the second half when they were gifted a second goal after 48 minutes. A mix-up between Challinor and Fettis allowed Walters in and the former Crewe man was allowed to bundle the ball over the line as Fettis raced back to his line, trying to clear.
Fettis had to push two further efforts over the bar minutes later as City began to turn the screw. Former Chester man Dave Flitcorft entered the fray after 55 minutes for Barry-Murphy.
A goalbound Walters effort was pushed over the bar by Fettis after 56 minutes following good work by Laurence Wilson on the right wing. Then on the hour Wilson himself had a shot across the face of goal, coming in from the right wing.
Marc Pugh replaced Nicky Adams after 61 minutes.
Ricky Ravenhill came on for Roberto Martinex after 68minutes.
In the 73rd minute Pugh put in a fine run and shot that brought a good save out of Danby and from the subsequent corner Bishop headed over the bar. Dave Buchanan for Bury and Simon Marples for Chester replaced Marc Goodfellow and Steven Vaughan respectively after 80 minutes.
Broughton missed a gilt edged chance to make it three for Chester but amazingly miskicked with an open goal at his mercy from a yard out.
Bury almost gifted an own goal a minute from time whenDanby was glad to see the ball deflected just wide of his post but from the corner City broke to the other end and Walters superbly lashed home a fine effort to send the away fans behind the Cemetery End goal wild.
