There was quite a strong Shakers support in the away end, with the stand almost full to the rafters. Bury named a squad with just two changes. Glynn Hurst was out of the side and was replaced in the starting lineup by James Dean, and Dave Buchanan was absent due to international duties so youngsters Domaine Rouse and Jack Dorney who scored a hat trick for the youth team last Saturday. Chesterfield gave young Ben Algar his League debut and Chesterfield's player of the month Jack Lester started up front.

It was quite a brisk start from Bury as their began to have brief moments of pressure in the opening five minutes, with plenty of crosses being knocked into the penalty area by Colin Woodthorpe and Nicky Adams. It was the home side who had the first chance on goal though when Jamie Lowry controlled the ball on the edge of the six yard box before he knocked the ball back to Jack Lester, leaving a gap in the Bury defence. Lester was unable to capitalize on the opportunity as he scuffed the ball wide of the left hand post.

The Bury defence was looking a bit shaky in the opening moments of the match, and more attacking play was needed from the Shakers. However, Chesterfield continued to control the game as their strong midfield created most of the chances. What Chesterfield were lacking was an attempt on goal, but they finally found a way through when Lester fired a powerful close range shot at goal which forced a lightning reflex save from Provett.Just a few moments later Chesterfield were on the prowl again when League debutant Ben Algar had a shot on goal after a long run into the area. Algar's shot had plenty of power, but lacked the accuracy as the ball hit the side netting.

Just a few moments later Chesterfield finally got what they were looking for as a crisp cross from the right met the head of towering striker Steve Fletcher who headed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal to give Fletcher his first goal for Chesterfield in a year. Chesterfield immediately continued their attacking play as Peter Leven had a good shot from distance, which went just over the bar.

The Shakers did manage to end the half on the attack when Andy Bishop managed to fire a good swerving cross into the area for James Dean, but Chesterfield keeper Barry Roche managed to over jump him and claim possession to secure Chesterfield's lead at the interval.

The second half began pretty much as the first half ended as Chesterfield continued their attacking play, and almost extended their lead early on when Derek Niven fired a powerful shot at goal which forced Jim Provett to make the quick save. Andy Mangan's introduction to the game gave the Shakers that little bit extra pace up front, and they used it well when Mangan fired a close range effort at goal, which forced keeper Barry Roche to make a quick save.

The final quarter of an hour saw an explosion of attacking and exhilarating football, which was started by the Shakers when they scored a dramatic equalizer when a superb cross into the area met the head of Colin Woodorpe who headed home his first goal in a Bury shirt. However, the Shakers lead only lasted around half a minute as Chesterfield regained the lead when a cross from Peter Leven went straight to the head of Steve Fletcher who had no problem heading the ball into goal from close range.

Chesterfield killed off the game for the Shakers when Jack Lester controlled the ball on the edge of the six yard box and calmly fired the ball past Jim Provett and secure Chesterfield's win.
