The Shakers took the lead after just 3 minutes when Efe Sodje's header set up Ben Futcher on the edge of the six yard box. Futcher fired a spectacular overhead kick which had keeper Tommy Lee beaten as it flew into the top right hand corner of the goal.

On 20 minutes Bury were beginning to pile pressure on the home side and came close to getting a goal when Dave Buchanan crossed the ball into the penalty area looking for the onrushing Elliott Bennett. The Chesterfield defence was quick to react however, and defender Kevin Austin was able to force the ball away from danger. After 23 minutes Bury were on the counter when Glynn Hurst escaped the offside trap and managed to make a long run down the right hand side. Hurst crossed the ball into the penalty area, but the Chesterfield defence was able to clear the ball away.

The away side came close to doubling their lead on 25 minutes when The Shakers won another free kick in a similar position to the first goal. Brian Barry-Murphy fired the ball into the crowded penalty area where Paul Scott was able to fire a glancing header at goal, which forced a superb save from Tommy Lee. Just one minute later Bury got their second goal when Efe Sodje powered through the Chesterfield defence and side footed the ball underneath the diving Tommy Lee and into the far corner of the goal.

With 5 minutes to go until halftime The Shakers got their third when Michael Jones played a good ball into the six yard box looking for Andy Morrell who had no difficulty firing the ball straight down the middle of the goal to extend the Shakers lead and give Andy Morrell his first goal in a Bury shirt.

The home side had their first real chance of the game on 43 minutes when Jamie Ward tried to fire the ball at goal from the edge of the penalty area, but Efe Sodje was able to slide in his path and deflect the ball away from danger. Chesterfield had another chance just one minute later when Darren Currie went for goal on the volley from the edge of the penalty area, but the ball went high over Wayne Brown's crossbar.

Halftime: Bury 3-0 Chesterfield

Bury started the second half the way they ended the first when they won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Brian Barry-Murphy firing a curling strike at goal but the ball went just over the crossbar. On 53 minutes Chesterfield pulled a goal back when the referee played advantage as Lloyd Dyer fired a low drive from the edge of the penalty area, which flew through the defence and into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to give the home side a lifeline.

Bury came close to regaining their three goal advantage when Dave Buchanan crossed the ball into the penalty area for Ben Futcher, who tried to scramble the ball over the goal line. However, Chesterfield keeper Tommy Lee was quick off his lien to gather possession. The home side came close to getting their second just one minute later when Jamie Ward went for goal from the edge of the area, which forced a good diving save from Wayne Brown in the Bury goal. Bury had a chance of their own though on 78 minutes when Richie Baker fired a good shot from the edge of the penalty area, which was well saved by Tommy Lee.
