The Shakers named just one change that snatched an equaliser in the dying seconds against Rotherham on Tuesday night. Andy Bishop was left out of the side as Phil Jevons came into the squad to make his first start for Bury. New loan signing John Welsh from Premiership side Hull made it onto the bench. If it hadn't have been for Bournemouth's large points deduction at the beginning of the season, they would be fighting for a playoff spot. Their form certainly shows that, as they have the best record in the league against teams in the top half of the table.
Neither team hit the ground running during the opening 5 minutes, with both teams trying to settle into the game. Andy Morrell came closest to converting a chance when Steve Haslam set him up with his back at goal. Morrell tried to turn and fire the shot, but defender Jason Pearce was able to dispossess him. Elliott Bennett had a chance from distance which went high over the bar, which ended just the second chance of the opening fifteen minutes.
The game was still struggling to get fired up as the game hit the 25 minute mark with neither team really testing each other. Elliott Bennett showed some superb skill though when he outwitted the Bournemouth defenders and looked to finish the dream chance with an off-balance goal, but the ball went just wide of the right hand post. Bury finally began to take command of the game, and had two good chances in quick succession with around ten minutes left in the first half. Michael Jones found room on the right wing to make a surging run into the penalty area and looked to play the ball across the face of goal for Andy Morrell, but keeper Shwan Jalal was bale to parry the ball wide for a corner. Andy Morrell was called into action again in the resulting corner when dived across the face of goal and tried to glance the ball into the right hand corner. The Bournemouth keeper stood his ground and claimed the ball off the line.
Halftime: Bury 0-0 Bournemouth
Despite a slow start to the second half, The Shakers broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half when Elliott Bennett capitalised on the keeper rushing off his line when he chipped the ball over the keeper's head with ease to set up a completely unmarked Andy Morrell, who wasn't going to miss the opportunity to fire the ball into the empty net and give Bury the lead.
Goal Bury 1-0 Bournemouth (Andy Morrell 55)
The goal seemed to be exactly what the game needed as both teams showed signs they could add to the goal tally. Danny Hollands almost grabbed the equaliser for the visitors straight away from the restart when he fired a strong header at goal from the edge of the six yard box, which keeper Wayne Brown was equal to. The Shakers didn't take long though before going on the attack themselves, and should have extended their lead when Efe Sodje set up Ben Futcher beautifully with a header back into the area. Ben Futcher's close range header left the keeper helpless, but the ball smashed against the crossbar and out of play.
After the Shakers close chance not long after they took the lead, the game went back to the quieter game we saw in the first half. It wasn't until the 80 minute mark that we saw a chance on goal when Stephen Dawson tried to catch the keeper while he was off his line with a powerful shot from the edge of the area, but the ball went wide of the left hand post. Elliott Bennett almost sealed the win for Bury when he had a chance just inside the penalty area during the final 5 minutes, but he shot was saved by the Bournemouth keeper at his left hand post.
