It was a tense opening five minutes at Gigg Lane, with both teams looking threatening on the break but not being able to find a way through each others back line. Andy Morrell had the first chance for the Shakers when he made a quick turn and strike, but keeper Luke Daniels had it covered. The visitors had their first chance around ten minutes in when Grant Holt tried to convert a Neil Ashton cross on the volley, but his hooked strike sailed just over the crossbar.

As the game began to settle, the home side were beginning to pile early pressure on the Shrews. The midfield was proving effective at winning possession, and were setting up the striker's well but the finished touch was still missing. Andy Morrell came close again when Phil Jevons set him up in space on the edge of the area for a quick drive, but the shot was comfortably saved by Luke Daniels. Hearts were in the mouths of every Bury fan with just over half an hour gone when Efe Sodje's back pass was pounced on by Omar Riza. The Shrews striker stormed through towards goal, but Wayne Brown kept calm and charged at Riza, blasting the ball away.

It was a very high tempo start to the second half, with both teams looking good once again going forward. It was the Shakers though had had the best of the early chances, Andy Morrell nearly converting a close range effort after an Elliott Bennett cross if it wasn't for Luke Daniels scrambling the ball away. Andy Morrell once again came close just a minute later when Michael Jones set him up just inside the penalty area, but Morrell's strike was superbly saved by Luke Daniels.

Things were beginning to get tense on the field as the game approached the final twenty minutes.
