After eventually ending their goal drought at Gigg Lane on Saturday, Bury had high hopes of continuing their good away form at Crewe. Two goals in the final ten minutes against Lincoln at Gigg Lane had undoubtedly added some much needed confidence to the side and set them up well for the short trip to Gresty Road. Alan Knill brought Cresswell back into the side following his one-match suspension, and started Tom Elliot in place of Andy Bishop.

Bury got stuck in straight from kick off, forming some good forward play, but it was Crewe that had the first real chance of the game on 11 minutes. Following a clumsy challenge from Newey on Miller, Crewe were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Captain Billy Jones took it, sending a curling ball towards the right hand side of the net, only to see the ball sail over the bar. Bury strung together some fancy footwork on 14 minutes with Baker eventually feeding the ball through to Lowe, who powered a shot to the left hand side the net, but Bogdan in the Crewe net did well to dive and block the shot which was destined for the bottom corner.

GOAL! Bury took the lead on 21 minutes following a corner won by Ryan Lowe. BBM sent in the ball from the right, aiming for Sodje waiting at the far post. Sodje headed the ball in front of goal, leaving Tom Elliot with the simple task of heading into the net from close range.

Calvin Zola had a good chance to make things even on the half hour mark, rising well to a cross from the right. His header seemed to clip the bar as it went over, giving Bury a goal kick.

Yellow card for Bury on 35 minutes - Richie Baker

GOAL! After winning a corner courtesy of Newey, Billy Jones sent a dangerous ball in front of goal on 39 minutes. It headed for the back post and the head of Worley whose powerful header beat Brown and hit the underneath of the net.

GOAL! Bury took the lead again seconds after the restart, after a long ball forward caught out Bogdan who was running out from his net. Elliot worked hard to tackle him and set the ball loose again for Ryan Lowe on the left of the box to simply slide the ball into an open net, with Ada pacing backwards.

With three minutes of added time indicated by the fourth official, BBM sent an inch perfect ball down the field for Lowe to chase. With plenty of space ahead of him, he then passed backwards to the approaching Elliot, who tried a low shot which was initially blocked by Bogdan, and then gathered after a quick scramble in the box.

The referee soon called time on an eventful first half. Bury had started well and were rewarded with a goal reasonably early on. Crewe were formidable on the wings however, giving Newey, Baker and Buchanan a torrid time. Their crosses and corners seemed deadly, proving so with their equaliser. The moments following this however were frantic, with Crewe struggling to cope with a long ball forward, and credit goes to Elliot for sprinting to challenge for the ball; a fight which eventually paid off as Bury were soon back in front. The game seemed far from over though..

Half Time - Railwaymen 1 Shakers 2

Bury wasted no time after the restart, with Lowe making space for himself in the Crewe box inside the first minute, before getting the ball towards Baker whose header was sent out of play by a diving header from Ada. Following a corner from BBM on 53 minutes, Crewe failed to clear the ball properly, leaving Elliot with the ball on the edge of the box. He controlled it well, eventually sending an overhead kick towards goal which went over the bar.

Zola missed a good chance to bring things level once more on 57 minutes, following a looping cross from Jones. Zola had beaten the offside trap and with only Brown to beat, he managed to head it well wide. Zola was back minutes later, challenging Sodje to a bouncing ball in the Bury box. He brought the ball down well but his shot lacked pace and was gathered by Brown. A clever cross from Michael Jones on 64 minutes was crying out for a final touch! It was left by Lowe, and reached Baker, but he mistimed his feet and the ball skidded out of the box.

Comedy moment on 70 minutes! A low cross from Lowe was half saved by Bogdan, before letting the ball creep through his legs and roll perilously close to the line before being eventually cleared.

Substitution for Bury on 71 minutes - Danny Racchi on for Ryan Lowe

GOAL! Crewe made things even on 72 minutes, with Zola finally getting the goal he had been threatening all night. He reacted well to a block from Brown, he then finished from close range with Brown none the wiser as to which way he was sending it.

Dawson came close to grabbing a winner on 81 minutes following some good linking play. He was left with the ball on the edge of the box, and tried a low drive which rattled the post and came back out into play, with Bogdan nowhere to be seen.

GOAL! Dawson then won the Shakers a penalty on 85 minutes after being taken down in the box by Jones. Jones then received his marching orders for his challenge, and Dawson was determined to take the penalty himself. Sending it low and hard into the bottom left hand corner, Dawson added another successful penalty to his tally for the season, sending the travelling Shakers wild. Bogdan went the right way but there was too much power behind the ball to stop it.

Red card for Crewe on 85 minutes - Billy Jones

Five minutes of additional time were indicated by the fourth official as Bury carried on forward with Worrall. He did well, making space for himself deep into the Crewe box, before teeing up a shot for Elliot who saw it blocked. Dawson caused more controversy deep into injury time by having another Crewe player sent off for taking him out en route to goal. Dawson powered forward after a cross field ball from Worrall. Ada was there with him, and knocked him off the ball. Referee Mr Fostor saw it as warranting another straight red card for stopping another on-goal opportunity for Dawson.

Red card for Crewe on 90+3 minutes - Patrick Ada

The referee eventually called time on a fiery second half, following five minutes of tense added time. Two straight red cards for Crewe in ten minutes saw Bury take the lead for the third time and then more importantly, hold onto it. The home fans understandably felt aggrieved, but after two professional fouls stopping two seemingly on-goal opportunities, it would be hard to argue with the referee's decisions. Bury used Crewe's deficit to their advantage, holding the ball well and still charging forward for goals deep into added time. They had taken the lead twice and lost it, but had fought back and eventually taken the three points they came for, if albeit in controversial fashion.
