Bury's unbeaten run was gathering pace going into today's home game with fourth placed Rotherham, after coming from behind twice away at Aldershot last week. Injuries were plaguing Alan Knill this week however, with the most serious case being David Worrall who ended up on crutches on Thursday. Ryan Lowe and Michael Jones were both struggling to train during the week but were both in the starting eleven for today's match.
Tom Elliot suffered under a heavy challenge on six minutes which saw him struggling on the sideline and eventually having to be substituted. Another injury woe for the team to cope with was not what the Shakers needed against a strong Rotherham side.
Substitution for Bury on 9 minutes - Richie Baker on for Tom Elliot
Bury's first shot on target came courtesy of Danny Racchi on 11 minutes who tried a low long rang effort, which saw Andy Warrington getting down low to gather. A dangerous corner from BBM moments later landed in front of goal but was cleared confidently by Ellison. Some quick thinking from Le Fondre down the right wing on 16 minutes saw his cross cleared by Cresswell for a corner. Taken by Law, it was too deep into the box for anyone to gain any real contact.
Law was back moments later, running at the Bury defence. He eventually made his way into the box and took a shot from the right of the box, which Brown got down well to save. A good cross at the opposite end from Racchi on 19 minutes had to be forced over the bar for a Bury corner, leaving BBM to take it. Another dangerous ball swooped in front of goal, looking for Sodje, but Warrington palmed the ball away to be cleared.
Le Fondre was left with one of the easiest chances to take the lead on 23 minutes after he beat the offside trap and was left one on one with Brown, less than ten yards out. He somehow managed to shoot straight at Brown, who blocked it, leaving it for Le Fondre to shoot again, but Brown saved once more.
Rotherham were awarded a free kick on the right wing after a foul from Baker on 24 minutes. Ellison sent in a nippy ball to the near post, and Le Fondre made contact from close range and forced an acrobatic save from Brown who palmed the ball onto the bar and away to the left. Brown was left on the floor after the save, and had to be substituted. Yet another injury headache for Alan Knill!
Substitution for Bury on 27 minutes - Cameron Belford on for Wayne Brown
Le Fondre and Cresswell had words with each other and then the referee on 38 minutes after a bit of a push and shove, but no cards were dished out. Baker worked well in midfield to lay off Ryan Lowe on 41 minutes but his shot from the edge of the box was well wide. Dawson took the ball to the right of the box on 43 minutes, leaving it for Buchanan who sent in a cross looking for Jones but he just couldn't make contact.
Four minutes of additional time were indicated by the fourth official as Belford took a goal kick.
GOAL! Rotherham took the lead with moments of the first half left after a short corner left Bury surprised. It was passed short to Ellison whose looping cross turned into a shot, and it dropped into the net, with Belford on the floor.
Bury 0 Rotherham 1
The remainder of the half was played out to no avail and the sides soon left the field.
Half Time - Bury 0 Rotherham 1
GOAL! Bury made the ideal start to the second half by bringing things level. An inch perfect forward ball from BBM to Baker on 46 minutes was then passed to Lowe who was running towards goal. Lowe then took a shot which went underneath Andy Warrington and into the net. The build-up play was second to none and it seemed that the Shakers were not letting the injuries hold them back.
Bury 1 Rotherham 1
Racchi was left with some space on the left of the box on 53 minutes and decided to shoot at goal rather than square the ball for Lowe who was waiting in front of goal. Racchi forced a save from Warrington but it was more good build up play from the Shakers who seemed to have taken Rotherham by surprise.
Yellow card for Bury on 56 minutes - Tom Newey
A low cross from Lowe on 63 minutes seemed to tee up Baker in front of goal with a golden opportunity to take the lead. His shot was deflected over the bar for a corner, which BBM sent in for a unmarked Lowe whose header was blocked by a packed penalty box.
Bury were awarded a penalty in controversial style on 65 minutes after Lowe was upended in the box by Mills. Dawson stepped up to take the penalty, which was initially blocked by Warrington, and the rebound fell to Dawson who sent the ball sailing over the bar. It was a brilliant opportunity for Bury to take the lead, and the Shakers might wonder why the only striker on the field, Ryan Lowe, didn't take the spot kick.
Yellow card for Bury on 71 minutes - Ryan Cresswell
Substitution for Rotherham on 73 minutes - Ryan Taylor on for Tom Pope
Nicholas took a shot from outside the box on 78 minutes after Bury had tried to clear the threat, but it was well wide.
GOAL! Bury took the lead with less than ten minutes left after a ball from Jones was fortunately deflected into the path of Baker running forward. Using the outside of his boot, Baker finished the shot past Warrington for his first goal of the season.
Bury 2 Rotherham 1
Yellow card for Bury on 87 minutes - Efe Sodje
A Rotherham free kick from outside the box on 88 minutes was taken by Ellison and forced Belford to get down low and gather the ball at the right hand post.
Four minutes of additional time were indicated by the fourth official once again as Bury defended with all they had left. An intensely physical game had taken it's toll on a Bury side with key players missing, but they were not giving up. Le Fondre latched into a looping ball into the box with two minutes remaining but sent it well over the bar.
Cameron Belford made one of the saves of his career deep into stoppage time. Rotherham came forward obviously looking for an equaliser, and it looked possible as they were awarded a corner. It was yet another swooping dangerous ball in front of goal, and Belford put his gloves forward to palm the ball away, whilst Rotherham were convinced the ball had crossed the line. They were clutching at straws whilst Bury cleared the ball forward.
The final few seconds were very tense, with the home fans inches from an important home win against a strong side, and more importantly, against the odds. Two more additions to their injury list came in this game, so once the referee called time on an extraordinary second half, the home fans erupted with the players. Bury played well throughout, and defended against a Rotherham team keen to take advantage of a Shakers side with injury worries. The unbeaten run continues for another game, as Bury continue to steadily climb the table.
