Reported by Hannah Ingram at Gigg Lane
After a disappointing match last week at home to Accrington Stanley, the Shakers returned to Gigg Lane for their second home match in as many Saturdays. This week they welcomed mid-table Cheltenham to a sun-drenched Gigg Lane, whilst Alan Knill gave starting berths to Richie Baker and Ryan Cresswell. The Shakers were still searching for their first home win and first goal at home, whilst Cheltenham hadn't won since beating Rochdale at home in mid-August. Three points were on the table, and it would be a case of who wanted them most!
The Shakers had a bright start, culminating in a strong counter attack on six minutes. A clearance pass from Dawson set up Lowe in midfield who sent a clever ball wide to Worrall. He then ran down the right wing, sending a curling cross into the box looking for Bishop, but Justin Richards cleared it for a corner. The resulting corner was aimed for Sodje in the box but he was penalised for fouling Scott Brown in the Robins' net.
A good ball from Murphy on 17 minutes curled across the box for Worrall on the right hand side of the box, only to see his pass blocked and carried out of the box. BBM was there to claim the loose ball though, sending another cross the Worrall, who controlled the ball well and saw his resulting shot deflected over the bar. Bury continued to control the ball well and keep their passing slick, and Baker was left with time to shoot just inside the box on 19 minutes but he fired straight at the Robins defence.
Cheltenham had a good chance to open the scoring on 22 minutes after a cross from Watkins met the head of Hayles in front of goal, but his header was weak and Wayne Brown scrambled forward to claim the loose ball. A cross from Newey on 26 minutes was destined for the head of Bishop, but he failed to drive his header anywhere, and it bounced well wide with Lowe chasing after it. A long ball forward from Wayne Brown on 28 minutes was dinked forward into the path of Lowe who tried to lob Scott Brown who was far out of his net, only to watch the ball bounce on top of the bar and over. Hayles was in action at the other end moments later, forcing Wayne Brown to get down low and save from a low drive just outside the box.
Richie Baker sent a sneaky through ball to Lowe on 34 minutes, which set him up well in the box, but shooting from an acute angle meant he sent it wide of the post. Following a free kick from Scott on 40 minutes, Lowe set up Dawson in the box with time to turn and shoot, sending the ball narrowly over the bar. Bishop was then left time to shoot from the left of the box on 42 minutes after some good work from Dawson, but his shot was sent out for a corner.
Two minutes of added time were indicated by the fourth official as Bury seemed to panic at the back. Tom Newey struggled to clear a ball from deep in the corner, passing to Sodje who seemed to set up a Cheltenham attack. It was eventually cleared but the Robins came back to earn a corner right before the break. Taken by Bird towards the far post, it was cleared by Cresswell for another corner. This time it sent in by Bird towards a crowded penalty box, and was tipped over the waiting heads by Wayne Brown and cleared for a counter attack. As Worrall made his way forward, the referee called time on a much better half of play than the past few games!
Bury had the better of the possession and the chances to break the deadlock, but testing Scott Brown in the Robins' net was the final challenge. Baker and Worrall had provided plenty of attacking passes, but it was only the finishing touch that the Shakers were lacking. The first half was a marked improvement from the past few games, and the boys will have felt unlucky to have still not scored on home turf by half time.

Half Time substitution for Cheltenham - Josh Low on for Marley Watkins
Straight from the whistle, Bury were back into action with Lowe hassling the Robins defence. Bishop then received the ball in the box but was penalised for grabbing shirts.
Substitution for Cheltenham on 51 minutes - David Hutton on for Julian Alsop
A poor backwards header from Diallo on 52 minutes following a long ball forward from Wayne Brown fell into the path of Lowe who shot from close range and forced a good save from Scott Brown. It was a brilliant opportunity to open the scoring and Lowe will be gutted he missed that! Baker tinkered on the edge of the box with the ball just before the hour, threading the ball through for Worrall who won a corner. Some sustained Bury pressure followed but the end product was gathered by Scott Brown.
Substitution for Cheltenham on 61 minutes - Elvis Hammond on for Frankie Artus
A good cross field ball from Baker on 64 minutes forced Diallo to head the ball back to Scott Brown from close range whilst under pressure from Bishop.
Yellow card for Bury on 67 minutes - David Worrall
Substitution for Bury on 67 minutes - Michael Jones on for David Worrall
Hutton managed to nutmeg Newey on 69 with a close range shot which was low and to Wayne Brown's left, but he got down well to gather. Ryan Lowe had another chance on goal moments later with seemingly only the keeper to beat, but the ball ran too far in front of him and was saved by Scott Brown. A cross field ball from Dawson to Jones on the left hand side on 73 minutes set up the Scouser with space to shoot, but his curling effort was wide.
A quickly taken Cheltenham free kick on 74 minutes set up Richards with space to shoot before Sodje deflected his shot away for a corner. The resulting corner was cleared with confidence by a strong header from Cresswell, but Wayne Brown was left on the floor holding his head. After a bit of attention from the physio, Brown was back on his feet, with play resuming via a drop ball.
Substitution for Bury on 80 minutes - Danny Racchi on for Richie Baker
Richards had a strong shot blocked on 83 minutes after a throw in wasn't dealt with by Bury. A looping cross from Racchi on 85 minutes seemed destined for Bishop but Brown got up well to claim the ball first. Dawson won a corner on 87 minutes; taken by Jones, it was headed first by Scott and then by Diallo who put the ball over the bar. The resulting corner came to nothing as the referee blew up for fouling in the box.
Five minutes of added time were indicated by the fourth official as Lowe was judged to be offside after a long ball forward. Hammond had Bury's hearts in their mouths as he paced forward, but his quick cross was missed by everyone stood in front of goal. Hammond did it again moments later after latching onto a long ball and firing just over the bar; fortunately he was offside regardless.
GOAL! A gutting blow for Bury came with seconds of the game left. Barry Hayles beat the offside trap and managed to shoot from a tricky angle on the left hand side of the box, somehow beating Brown and sending the ball into the bottom right hand corner. It was a devastating blow for Bury who had played so well, and didn't deserve to concede so deep into extra time.
Shakers 0 Robins 1
With barely a minute left of the game, the referee soon called time on a gutting and frustrating afternoon for the Shakers. Their performance was so much better than recent weeks, and had plenty of chances to win a game against a less-than-average Cheltenham side, but missed chances have cost Bury dearly - three points to be exact!
