Alexander sets sights on experience

Posted on: Wed 13 Jun 2007

The Bury TimesKeith Alexander has set his sights on strengthening the spine of the Shakers side.

With centre-half pair Paul Morgan and Ben Futcher top of their wanted list, Bury would seem to be placing a heavy emphasis on experience next season.

Alexander has confirmed that he will talk to his former captain Paul Morgan on his return from St Lucia next week, and the club have already made an offer to Futcher, who also returns from holiday in a few days.

But the search for seasoned League Two players will not end there, vowed Alexander, who is also looking to recruit in midfield.

"We have got Bishop and Hurst up front and they are a good experienced pair," he said.

"If we can get someone like that in midfield and then at the back, we will be a different prospect this season."

Alexander said he expects a lot of competition for the signature of Morgan, who has signalled his intention to leave Lincoln and move back to the North West to study.

The deal may hinge on whether Lincoln demand a fee for the Northern Irishman, who has a year left to run on his contract at Sincil Bank.

Futcher's situation is also unclear - although his future almost certainly lies away from Peterborough, where he is contracted for the next 12 months.

The 6ft 7ins defender was placed on the transfer list last season, and would appear to be being pushed out of the club by Posh chairman Darragh Macanthony.

"We need to shed some of the players we do not want any more," Macanthony said. "But I will not be held to ransom over contract pay-offs as some of them seem to be expecting.

"These players can easily find other clubs and I have already told a couple of them how I feel and it's now down to them to find a club in order to further their careers."

Futcher has also been contacted by Mansfield Town, and would appear to fit the type of player Alexander and Chris Casper are looking for.

"I know and Chris knows that we have to get the right type of players," Alexander said.

"Just because we are looking for experienced players does not mean they have to be older - Dave Buchanan has got 60-odd games under his belt and he is still only young."
