England striker David Nugent could bring in a cash jackpot for his former club

BURY could finally be about to cash in on the sale of former striker David Nugent as Sunderland opened the bidding at around £7million.

If his current club Preston North End agree to sell the England international, the Shakers will pocket around £1million thanks to a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

Sunderland, lead by Manchester United legend Roy Keane, are certain to face competition for Nuge's signature, so the price could go even higher.

Shakers director of football Keith Alexander will be hoping a deal is done soon as he looks to bring in players for next season.

The ex-Lincoln boss is due to have talks with his former captain and centre half Paul Morgan next week and he has also moved for Peterborough's 6ft 7ins defender Ben Futcher.

Alexander, currently holidaying in St Lucia, said: "I'm here to produce a team which is capable of challenging for promotion. I'm not interested in hanging around at the wrong end of the table.

"We are looking for experienced players. We have Bishop and Hurst up front and they are a good experienced pair, so if we can get someone like that at the back we will be a different prospect next season."

Alexander is still sweating on decisions from five out of contract players, who have until Sunday, June 17 to make up their minds on whether they stay at Gigg Lane.

He is confident Nicky Adams, David Buchanan, Aaron Grundy, Andy Parrish and Colin Woodthorpe will sign.

Meanwhile, manager Chris Casper returned from a 10-day break in the sun to hear the Shakers had a home draw in the League Cup, against Carlisle.

He said: "Last season we showed what we can do at home in the cups, so we feel confident we'll get through."
