Making the most of set-pieces proved crucial at Gigg Lane as the Imps slipped to a 3-1 defeat to a Bury side who continued their unbeaten start to the season.
City trailed on the half-hour mark when a Bury corner ended up being hammered into the roof of the net from six yards by Andy Morrell but within seven minutes the Imps had drawn level when Janos Kovacs flicked a Scott Kerr corner goalwards, although Bury defender David Buchanan got the final touch before the ball went over the line.
Corners also led to the third and fourth goals of the game as firstly Efe Sodje headed home a deep Brian Barry-Murphy centre past Rob Burch at the far post five minutes after the break and in the 66th minute, after Ben Wright was penalised for a foul on Paul Scott as the pair went up in the box, Andy Bishop made it 3-1 from the penalty spot.
Lenell John-Lewis for Kevin Gall was the only change in the starting line-up for this Coca-Cola League 2 game against high-flying Bury at Gigg Lane as manager Peter Jackson stuck with the 4-3-3 formation that came up with the goods against Barnet.
Bright sunshine greeted the two teams as referee Michael Oliver led them out of the tunnel and it was the the hosts who got the game underway defending the end behind which sat the travelling Imps' support.
