Shrewsbury's Report
Bury grabbed the lead with in 34 seconds of the game and it was after Town played themselves into trouble, Dave Edwards played the ball back to Danny Hall and he was in trouble after that, Hall took the ball towards the right-wind to clear, he hooked the ball away but Buchanan had closed down well, the ball looped up and Bishop pressured Langmead who tried to clear but it fell to Bishop who slotted the ball past Mackenzie to make it 1-0 to Bury. It was the visitors who were having the better of the early exchanges and they pulled Town all over the place with a quick sweeping move, a long ball was chased down by Glynn Hurst who won possession, he checked and played the ball to Buchanan who played a great cross field ball to find Bishop, he headed the ball back into the run of Richard Baker who looked to smash in a first time volley but luckily for Town he didn't connect cleanly and Mackenzie was there to collect the ball.
Town best move of the opening exchanges came after Marc Tierney played the ball to Neil Ashton, he put the ball down the left side to release Derek Asamoah, his pace took him away and then he cut into the box along the by-line, he had options coming into the box but put in a cross cum shot that flew across the face of the goal. With quarter of an hour of the game gone Town were getting closer to levelling the game, a promising move saw the ball come to Stewart Drummond, he had his back to goal but swivelled and then put in a great shot but Warrington got a hand to tip the ball onto the bar, it dropped down into the danger area and Asamoah tried to get a head to it but it was an awkward ball and the header went over the bar.
Bury were doing everything to hang onto the lead and in a 60-second spell firstly Glynn Hurst was booked for kicking the ball away and then his strike partner Andy Bishop was booked for a needles tug on Danny Hall. Ref Sutton was happy to pull out his cards and made his third booking of the game with just over 15-minutes of the game gone, Buchanan looked to break down the left and get past Langmead, the Town defender mistimed his tackle and caught Buchanan and was some what unlucky to pick up a booking.
The game was a real scrappy one with Bury putting bodies behind the ball but they weren't sitting on their lead and were getting forward whenever they could. Town couldn't get into any rhythm and all they could show for their effort was a couple of long range efforts from Derek Asamoah. With the half-time break approaching it was becoming more frustrating for the Town fans with their side not making the running and with the officials calling up a lot of border line offside decisions.
Town nearly levelled just as the game went into injury time, it came after Neil Ashton had been sent flying by Richard Baker some 40-yards from the Bury goal which Baker was booked for. Marc Tierney placed the ball and then swung a high ball into the Bury box, Drummond challenged for the header but the ball fell to Asamoah, he drilled in a low shot which Warrington got a leg to block the ball. Town did level just on the stroke of half-time after an attack had looked to have broken down, the ball was put over the top from Mackenzie and flicked on by Leo Fortune-West, the chance looked to have gone but Asamoah wasn't giving the ball up and continued his run to gain possession of Colin Woodthorpe, Asamoah then flicked in a shot which took a deflection off Scott to loop over Warrington and make it 1-1.
Town were looking a lot brighter after the restart and were pushing the visitors back with some good attacking football. The ball was being pumped forward at times with Fortune-West looking for the flick on's to set Derek Asamoah in on goal. Bury were doing some desperate defending at times but they were doing enough to keep Town at bay. First from Asamoah and then Warrington dived bravely at the feet of Ben Davies after the Town player had burst into the box on the angle.
The visitors grabbed a second goal after Danny Hall was guilty of giving the ball away twice, the ball came to Richard Baker who played a great ball to put Bishop into space on the right, he played a great one-two with Glynn Hurst to get past Tierney and then drilled in a great low shot to the far post to give Chris Mackenzie no chance. Bury were having the better of the play with just over 60-minutes gone and they were pushing and pushing Town to add to their lead. David Buchanan did well to break down the left and find space, he then played a superb cross to the back post to find Glynn Hurst who got a great header in but Mackenzie was equal to it and clawed away the ball with a great save.
Gary Peters made his first change of the evening on 61-minutes bringing on Lee Canoville to replace Danny Hall. The visitors got a third goal on 65-minutes and it was too simple, it started with Marc Tierney pulling back Mocquet when the ball was rolling out for a Town goal kick. It was Mocquet who placed the ball, he then put in a ball at a decent to find Glynn Hurst who had found space between the Town defenders and put in an unstoppable header to make it 3-1 to Bury. Town were looking to grab goals back and a nice piece of play between Tierney and Ashton saw Tierney breaking for the by-line, he got in a good looking low cross which Drummond stepped over, it then came to Dave Edwards but the ball came to him quickly and he couldn't get a clean shot in on goal.
With just under 20-minutes remaining Gary Peters made his second switch of the evening bringing on Michael Symes to replace Leo Fortune-West in a like for like swap. Derek Asamoah's pace had been causing problems all night and when he got onto the end of a through ball he looked to be in on goal, he tried to stab the ball past the out rushing Warrington but his shot flew wide of the far post. Town were still pushing and were getting closer to a goal, they were putting a lot of pressure onto the Bury box and when Edwards played the ball to Symes he looked for options, he played the ball to Davies who cut to the by-line and then hung up a great cross to the back post for Symes who got a good looking downward header than flew just wide.
On 83-minutes Gary Peters made his final switch of the game bringing on Andy Cooke to replace Neil Ashton as Town looked to push for goals. Town had a great chance to grab a goal back after Ben Davies had put Michael Symes in behind the Bury defence, he did everything right as he flicked the ball past Warrington but it struck the outside of the post and the chance was gone. Nothing was going for Town around the box, the ball was with Tierney on the left, he played an inviting ball into the edge of the box for Andy Cooke, he got a good looking flick header but Warrington was his box quickly to get down and smoother the ball.
