Chesterfield's Version
Lee Richardson's Spireites maintained their unbeaten start to the season and went top of League Two after a 3-1 win, but they were given a late fright by a battling Bury side.
Lee Richardson juggled his squad with international call ups denying him the services of Aaron Downes and loan singing Adam Rooney. His team selection was further hampered by injuries to Jamie Winter, Jamie Ward , Nicky Travis and Gareth Davies whilst Phil Picken and Peter Leven returned after injury doubts and Steve Fletcher and Jack Lester returned after being rested in midweek. Richardson decided on youth for one position and showed a huge amount faith in Dronfield's talented second year scholar Ben Algar who made his full League debut and play on the left of midfield in a 4-4-2 with Peter Leven partnering Derek Niven in the centre of the Spireite midfield.
Bury named a squad with just two changes. Glynn Hurst was out of the side and was replaced in the starting lineup by James Dean, and Dave Buchanan was absent due to international duties so youngsters Domaine Rouse and Jack Dorney who scored a hat trick for the Shakers youth team last Saturday
The Spireites started rather sloppily attacking the Cross Street End with Phil Picken trying to pick the ball up out of play but the ball didn't make it over the touch before he picked it up, and he was perhaps slightly fortunate not to be booked for his mistake. Thankfully both player and Officials found the funny side of events
Bury pushed forward and started to dominate midfield while the Spireites side fathomed out who was playing where. Though Chesterfield created the best early chance for Jack Lester who snatched at shot at the near post after good work by Lowry and Picken on the Chesterfield right.
Bury won the first corner on 10 minutes after Challinor cross was deflected out. Bury still pushed forward and were quicker to the ball. Nicky Adams cross was well gathered by Roche. On 13 Bury's James Dean hit a wayward shoot wide of Roche's goal.
The Spireites were finding it difficult to get any momentum and rhythm going but gradually started to find their feet. On 15 Ben Algar made his first telling contribution with a deep cross that was gathered by ex Hartlepool stopper Jim Provett in the Shakers goal.
On 22 neat work by Lowry and Picken gave the ball to Derek Niven who showed quick feet beating two Bury defenders and as the goal opened him he fired the ball wide of Provett's goal. Provett was again exposed by some neat passing on 29 minutes and young Ben Algar found himself one on one with Bury keeper running in from the left flank and perhaps a testament to youth and talent pirouetted with the ball easily baffling and beating Provett and also sadly finally himself after a tremendous bit of skill with the goal gapping from a narrow angle he sadly missed the ball.
The Spireites continued to press and had the ball pinging across the cross the Shakers area before Leven's cross on 32 minutes was met by a the head of STEVE FLETCHER whose thumping header beat Provett all ends up to give the Spireites a deserved 1-0 lead and his first Spireite goal.
The Spireites continued to look the better side and continued their attacking play as Peter Leven had a good shot from distance, which went just over the bar.
The Shakers did manage to end the half on the attack when Andy Bishop managed to fire a good swerving cross into the area for James Dean, but Barry Roche managed to out jump him and claim possession to secure Spireites lead at the interval.
Half Time 1-0
The Spireites started the half brightly kicking toward a noisy and supportive Kop. Ben Algar again showed some neat touches and bursts of pace and combined well at times with Robertson, Leven,Lester and Fletcher.
On 49 a trademark (well according to Sky last week) Derek Niven 25 yard right footed volley was caught well by a diving Provett . The Spireites pressed but Bury stuck to their task and started to push forward with a threat. Gray and Kovacs seemed up for the challenge with some robust and also neat and clever defending.
Ben Futcher was booked on 56 after another of a set persistant fouls according to the referee on Jack Lester. Gregor Robertson's shot flow high into the Kop.
On 59 the Shakers brought on Andy Mangan for James Dean. Mangans first touch brought him in on goal and he fired a close range effort which Roche did well to keep out. This should have been an alarm cal for the Spireites as the pace Mangan then continued to cause problems.
Long throw expert Dave Challinor then pulled back Jack Lester who was about to squirm through on goal 20 yards from the Shakers goal, the Spireite number 14 then smashed his shot if anything further into the Kop than Robertson had minutes before.
Provett was relieved to see Peter Leven's shot go narrowly wide of his goal on 65 minutes.
Bury however pulled back level though on 74 minutes a Cross by Andy Parrish was headed goal wards by Colin Woodthorpe though Andy Mangan was originally credited with the goal from left side of penalty area and gave Roche no chance 1-1
The Spireites though seem made of sterner stuff than of last season and within a minute were back infront. STEVE FLETCHER again heading home after a great cross by Phil Picken. 2-1 Spireites.
On 82 Nicky Adams replaced John Dorry for the Shakers On 84 JACK LESTER completed the scoring made it five goals in his last five Spireite appearances wrapping up the points in the process after being set up by Man of the Match Steve Fletcher Lester fired home from 12 yards. On 85 the tiring Ben Algar was replaced by Alan O'Hare on 84 and the youngster received a deserved standing ovation.
The Spireites ran out the clock for a deserved win against a hard working Bury side. The players were deservedly clapped off the pitch but you have to feel that there is still more to come from this Chesterfield squad, especially if they cut out the odd bits of sloppy defensive play . Dave Bentley also appears to have nurtured a real talent in Ben Algar and pleasingly Lee Richardson's Spireites look threatening every time they go forward.
